About The Position

The Billing & Coding Specialist will abstract and ensure accuracy of diagnosis, procedure, patient demographics, and other required data elements. This role aids in the creation of training and educational coding guidance documents for physicians and Associates. The specialist will work independently to meet project deadlines, contact physicians for clarification or missing information, and identify coding trends related to edits, denials, and physician feedback. Recommendations for policy and procedural changes for revenue enhancement will be made. This position is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information and must follow HIPAA security policies and procedures, reporting any suspected or actual violations or breaches.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required
  • CPC and CRC preferred or CCS-P
  • English language skills
  • Minimum 5 years of coding experience
  • Extensive coding in multiple specialties including: all primary care specialties, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Rheumatology, and hospital CCU/ICU.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail oriented and deadline driven attitude
  • Sound knowledge of medical terminology
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, and internet)
  • Ability to multitask and keep a sense of urgency
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong time management, organization skills, and work ethic
  • Ability to interact effectively with physicians, liaisons, department administrators, and associates.
  • Working knowledge of payer policies, CMS policies, local and national regulatory and compliance policies; regular utilization of all available coding resources.
  • Must be able and willing to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

Responsibilities

  • Contact physician when conflicting or ambiguous information appears in the medical record.
  • Request diagnosis from physicians when not recorded in medical records.
  • Identify coding trends relative to edits/denials/physician feedback.
  • Recommend policy and procedural changes and improvements for revenue enhancement.
  • Maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information.
  • Follow HIPAA security policies and procedures affecting your job, and report any suspected or actual violation or breach.
