About The Position

TrueCare is a healthcare provider serving San Diego and Riverside Counties, dedicated to making healthcare accessible to underserved communities with culturally sensitive and affordable services. The WIC Coordinator will interface with patients and staff to enhance recruitment, retention, and re-engagement in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. This role involves providing routine WIC services, identifying eligible TrueCare patients, and encouraging enrollment and continuous participation in the WIC Program.

Requirements

  • Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English and Spanish.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of WIC program requirements.
  • At least two (2) years of customer service experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Computer proficiency with data entry and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Experience providing breastfeeding support and promoting a culture of breastfeeding.
  • Knowledge of available health and human services/resources within the community.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews daily appointments in the electronic health record system (EPIC) to identify WIC eligible children and determines their status in the WIC Program using the California WIC Database (WIC WISE).
  • Participates in morning huddles and shares WIC status with lead health center staff to identify patients needing an encounter regarding the WIC program.
  • Initiates face-to-face encounters with parents/guardians of WIC-eligible children and provides targeted WIC retention interventions.
  • Schedules appointments for WIC-eligible participants and assists them in obtaining monthly food benefits.
  • Troubleshoots issues that prohibit participants from receiving WIC benefits and works with WIC Program staff to resolve barriers.
  • Provides health center staff with accurate information on the WIC program, including eligibility requirements and procedures for obtaining special formula and electric breast pumps.
  • Functions as a WIC Nutrition Assistant II, performing enrollments, recertifications, nutrition and breastfeeding education, and other duties to facilitate WIC participation.
  • Participates in WHS/Pediatric department meetings and shares WIC Program outcomes, challenges, and successes with the health center team.
  • Participates in WIC Staff Meetings and trainings.
  • Keeps current with WIC policies and procedures.
  • Flexibility to work at assigned WIC location(s) based on department needs and/or goals.
