About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Religious Education, this part-time position is responsible for assisting and supporting the Director in the Religious Education program. The Assistant is expected to be a role model and support the Diocese of Tucson's mission to evangelize, catechize, and educate youth. The Assistant shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching, both academically and behaviorally, in accordance with Ephesians 4:1. This ministerial position requires recognizing and supporting the Catholic Mission of the program by acting and instructing consistent with Roman Catholic teachings, and not espousing any doctrine inconsistent with them. The Assistant should demonstrate living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith community and striving to model Jesus' teachings through attitude and example.

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church.
  • If a baptized Catholic, must be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Must have a working knowledge of and commitment to all the Religious Education programs at Our Mother of Sorrows for children 4 years old through high school.
  • General computer skills including internet research.
  • Excellent communications skills include written and verbal.
  • Must be able to resolve conflicts when they arise.
  • Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Must be a self-starter, be well-organized, flexible, and be a team player.
  • Always maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Director of Religious Education, catechists, and parish staff.
  • Weekend work will be required, and evening work may be required.
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously and with a sense of urgency.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parents, and others.
  • Be able to successfully complete criminal history and background check.
  • Be fluent in speaking and writing English and Spanish.
  • A working knowledge of Religious Education programs.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the Bilingual Religious Education program or activities when the Director of Religious Education is unavailable.
  • Assisting with Bilingual Religious Education open registration in August.
  • Helping with mailings as needed.
  • Assigning students to appropriate Bilingual Religious Education programs.
  • Purchasing materials and supplies within the Bilingual Religious Education budget.
  • Making supply boxes for Bilingual Religious Education catechists.
  • Unlocking the doors for the Sunday Bilingual Religious Education program.
  • Helping set up sacrament gatherings (Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
  • Making copies for both English and Spanish Bilingual programs.
  • Assisting with the set-up of Catechist gatherings.
  • Assisting with the set-up, program, and clean up for Christmas programs and May Crowning Celebration.
  • Assisting with all sacrament celebrations.
  • Keeping the Director of Religious Education informed of any problems that arise.
  • Working cooperatively with the administration and all staff members, promoting positive relationships with students, parents, and others.
  • Maintaining a professional manner and demonstrating a sense of professional responsibility.
  • Adhering to the Diocese of Tucson Safe Environment program and guidelines regarding appropriate boundaries and compliance with current mandatory reporting law.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
