About The Position

The Bilingual Navigator’s role is to facilitate the Chicago Advocacy Network for Hope (CAN Hope) program goals by supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence as they access CAN Hope services in English and/or Spanish. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting survivors who have experienced domestic or sexual violence through the CAN Hope intake procedures, facilitating warm referrals to co-located and non-co-located CAN Hope partners, facilitating referrals to other community resources, engaging in on-going learning about the experiences of survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and acting as a community steward of CAN Hope. This position will also operate as a Greeter when assigned to maintain staffing levels and continuity of services. Requirements

  • Minimum education requirement of a bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, human services, or other related field
  • Strong team building, problem solving, organizational, and oral communication skills are necessary.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multiple cultures and the cultural impact on the delivery of services a must.

Nice To Haves

  • preferred 1 year experience in social services or related field.
  • Training or experience in working with survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence, trauma survivors, people with disabilities, and people with mental health disorders preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Cook County courts, Chicago area social service system, and victim’s rights preferred.
  • Completion of 40-Hour Illinois Domestic Violence Training (or a transferable state) preferred, or to be obtained within 3 months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with visitors by phone or email to schedule appointments at the center or be available to accept visitors on a drop-in basis;
  • Coordinate with fellow team members (Security, Greeters, Navigators) to welcome visitors to the center utilizing skills such as relationship-building, crisis intervention, and cultural humility;
  • Conduct the centralized intake process, using a survivor-centered approach, by guiding the survivor through:
  • Crisis intervention as needed;
  • Informed consent procedures;
  • Education about center services and procedures;
  • Intake forms;
  • Safety planning;
  • Service planning;
  • CAN Hope partner referral option and forms;
  • Accessing available survivor resources such as hygiene supplies, clothing, household items, etc.;
  • Facilitating warm handoffs to survivor’s chosen CAN Hope partners through face-to-face referral, telehealth referral, phone referral, or email referral; and
  • Checking in with the survivor at the end of their intake process to ensure all requests have been addressed.
  • Initiate and follow-through with advocacy services for assigned survivors of domestic and sexual violence by conducting outreach through safe contact methods.
  • Practice cultural humility and anti-racism by regarding survivors of domestic and sexual violence as leaders and the experts of their experiences using skills such as active listening, non-judgmental approaches, radical acceptance, and supporting survivor choice.
  • Utilize trauma-informed care approaches by regarding each survivor of domestic and sexual violence as a whole person with intersecting identities, relationships, needs, and desires living within an environment of systems that are built on oppression of historically and currently marginalized populations.
  • Operate as Greeter when needed or assigned to fulfill center staffing roles and ensure continuation of services.
  • Complete timely required documentation for every survivor interaction through hard case files and/or database.
  • Maintain center physical cleanliness and organization as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled meetings with supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled team meetings, partner meetings, and agency meetings.
  • Attend and participate in staff development trainings.
  • Actively participate in on-going CAN Hope program development.
  • Travel to ChicagoCAC headquarters as needed for scheduled meetings or other responsibilities.
  • Provide interpretation or translation of documents from Spanish to English and English to Spanish as assigned.
  • Support survivor leadership activities as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Practice continuing education by consistently learning about available resources, theoretical frameworks, current practices, relevant research studies, and specialized training about survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
  • Attend webinars, trainings, workshops, and conferences to advance knowledge about survivor-centered services.
  • Share learnings with the CAN Hope team and partners on an ongoing basis.
  • Perform in local networking opportunities.
  • Attend community outings, resource fairs, collaborations, etc. as a steward of the CAN Hope Initiative.
  • Build and foster relationships with community members to offer engagement with the CAN Hope Initiative as survivor leader, to receive services, or both.
  • Build and foster relationships with community organizations that intersect with domestic violence Survivors.

  • Timing of vacations may be dependent on client needs, as that’s our first priority.
  • PTO goes up to 40 days after 5 years.
  • Additional PTO for FMLA-related reasons up to 20 days.
