About The Position

The Career Pathways (CP) /SNAP Training & Employment Program (STEP) Navigator supports students as they access GED, ESOL, Career Technical and short-term training programs leading to economic mobility. This includes students enrolled in co-req and/or concurrent enrollment models bridging GED/ESOL/DevEd and CTE. The position supports low-income students’ connection to federal, state and local resources through deepened local and campus partnerships; expanded outreach and support for rural areas; and one-on-one student support. Requirements

  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Knowledge of at-risk students and their needs
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and listening)
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, self-manage, and collaborate as a member of a team to achieve tangible outcomes
  • Bicultural/multicultural skills sufficient to select appropriate behaviors, values and attitudes within different cultures during interactions with others
  • Equivalency of two (2) years of full-time work experience that reflects the knowledge, skills and experience to perform the essential functions listed above. This is typically achieved through an Associate’s Degree or two (2) years of full-time work experience which reflects the knowledge, skills and experience to perform the essential functions listed above. The college will review relevant education and experience as equivalent in most cases. Some experience cannot be exchanged for education and is noted above, if relevant.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in counseling, education, or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Develops initial Individual Success Plan with each STEP student, addressing short- and long-term academic and career goals
  • Provide academic, career, financial aid and personal advising to students in GED, ESOL, Career Technical, Integrated Education and Training and/or career pathways programs regarding: college programs, financial aid, admissions, registration, student success resources, community resources and services, and strategies for success
  • Meet with participants on a regular basis; monitor progress of each student on caseload; problem-solve and make appropriate referrals; serve as a liaison and advocate for students
  • Works directly with Admissions, Advising, College Access Programs, and other student service team members to facilitate enrollment and retention of students requiring additional support
  • Collects and enters appropriate participant data into databases for local, state and federal reporting
  • Assist participants in accessing concrete supports including SNAP, Child Care, housing, and transportation
  • Delivers presentations about program services, qualifications, and expectations to prospective students, community organizations, and on-campus partners
  • Support STEP outreach efforts through the college service district, with an emphasis on rural areas and outreach locations
  • Develop and maintain referral network of social service agencies and programs (Housing, DHS, WorkSource, & other Community Based Organizations)
  • Maintain relationships with DHS Navigators and other STEP providers in the district; attend regular community partner meetings
  • Receives, screens, and processes referrals from partner agencies
  • Collaborate with Academic Development Program staff, advisors, and other college departments to create an atmosphere supportive of students and student transitions
  • Participate in the annual planning process and evaluation of program services
  • Participate in the STEP and CP community of practice with other Oregon community colleges
  • Document and report on grant outcomes
  • Embraces diversity and actively collaborates effectively with a variety of students, staff and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Participates in recruitment and retention of students at an individual and institutional level in promotion of student success
  • Embraces, understands and uses appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions
  • Provides high quality, effective service to internal and external customers through continuous improvement and adoption of lean office practices
