BESS Operations Engineer

Intersect
•$200,000 - $210,000

About The Position

As a BESS Operations Engineer on Intersect's Operations team, you will own the technical performance, safety, and reliability of the company's utility-scale battery energy storage fleet. You will analyze operational data, lead root cause analyses on equipment faults, and work directly with field teams and OEMs to resolve complex technical issues and minimize downtime. You will support the long-term health of the storage portfolio by tracking availability, capacity, State of Charge (SOC), and cycling, and by partnering with engineers to identify fleet-wide improvements. You will document lessons learned and lead technical reviews of design drawings, calculations, and site procedures so operational insights continuously improve how Intersect builds and operates clean energy infrastructure. The Operations team safeguards the safety, reliability, and commercial performance of utility-scale power assets over their full lifecycle. The role involves collaborating with field specialists, analysts, and engineers to address grid and equipment challenges and strengthen operational feedback across the fleet. Intersect has a flexible workplace and seeks candidates located within 60 miles of one of its listed hubs: SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, Denver, Austin, Calgary, or Toronto. The team gathers four times a year for Team Week. Travel to operating sites is required, up to 25%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of engineering experience in utility-scale power generation or storage, including direct operational experience supporting utility-scale BESS projects greater than 100 MW.
  • Deep technical familiarity with BESS architectures, including cells, modules, racks, BMS, PCS, TMS, and EMS, and how OEM differences affect operations, safety, and warranties.
  • Track record of leading root cause analyses of complex electrical, thermal, or controls failures and translating findings into fleet-wide reliability improvements.
  • Strong analytical ability to evaluate BESS telemetry and historian data, including availability, capacity retention, SOC calibration, cycling limits, and ramp rates.
  • Experience reviewing electrical and mechanical design drawings, calculations, and site interconnection requirements.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% to operating sites across Texas and other portfolio regions.
  • Grounded, safety-first mindset aligned with Intersect's values of Equity, Humility, Authenticity, Long-run Value, and People Come First.
