About The Position

Evelyn’s House, part of BJC Home Care, is seeking a compassionate Bereavement Specialist to provide in‑person emotional support to patients and families experiencing anticipatory grief in a hospice setting. This role supports individuals of all ages—from children and teens to older adults—using developmentally appropriate approaches, including expressive arts techniques, during an emotionally intense and sacred time. The Bereavement Specialist partners closely with the interdisciplinary team to offer presence, stability, and comfort prior to death, with limited follow‑up support after death. This position is responsible for working with adults and children to help them understand and cope with feelings of grief before and/or after the death of a loved one. Evelyn’s House is the newest addition to BJC Hospice and BJCs continuum of care for patients with life-limiting illness, providing a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals and volunteers specially trained in pain and symptom management, counseling, and bereavement services for the dying. BJC Home Care is a large home care network offering a complete range of services across Missouri and Illinois.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Social Services/related field
  • Experience of less than 2 years
  • Valid Driver's License

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person emotional support to patients and families experiencing anticipatory grief in a hospice setting.
  • Support individuals of all ages (children, teens, older adults) using developmentally appropriate approaches, including expressive arts techniques.
  • Partner closely with the interdisciplinary team to offer presence, stability, and comfort prior to death, with limited follow-up support after death.
  • Facilitate grief support groups before and after a death at Evelyn’s House.
  • Provide support to client's coping with their grief, and provide anticipatory and follow-up bereavement visits.
  • Evaluate grief resources and select those to be utilized by BJC Hospice.
  • Coordinate grief activities.
  • Refer families to available services, counselors and support groups in the community.
  • Serve as a grief resource in the community and be involved in community organizations focused on education and support of pediatric and adult grief.
