This position involves working with general supervision to plan, lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal parts, equipment, and products. The company, Ducommun, is the oldest company in California, founded in 1849. It has a rich history, starting as a hardware supply store during the Gold Rush and later supporting the aerospace industry. Today, Ducommun is a global provider of manufacturing solutions for the aerospace, defense, and industrial markets, specializing in electronic and structural systems. Their Gardena, CA facility is a key supplier of large stretch-formed aircraft skins, hot forming of titanium, superplastic forming, and complex assemblies.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend instructions such as blueprints, shop drawings, and chem. mill templates with an emphasis on chemical milling features, excess and special conditions.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must be able to comply with specific safety policies.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal parts, equipment, and products.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, or product specifications to determine fabrication, assembly, and installation methods.
  • Performs all deburring operations.
  • Strips remaining maskant and silstic from finished chem mill parts.
  • Removes burrs and sharp edges using hand tools and materials like files and edge breakers.
  • Smooths edges and removes build-ups using air or electric equipment with abrasive disks and sleeves.
  • Operates burring equipment including countersink, grinding wheels, burring rolls, bench grinders, rotary files, drill presses, and jitterbug.
  • Controls thickness using ultrasonic gages, micrometers, calipers, and scales to work to close tolerances (+/-.002).
  • Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including leading projects and participating in project committees.
