About The Position

The Behavioral Health Tutor in the Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit (YCSU) plays a critical role in supporting the educational needs of youth (typically ages 10–17) experiencing acute behavioral health crises. The tutor works in a trauma-informed, therapeutic environment alongside mental health professionals to deliver individualized or small-group academic instruction, promote continuity of education, and support students’ return to their home schools or programs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in education, Special Education, or a related field.
• Valid Ohio teaching credential/certification.
• Mandatory participation in renewal and professional development activities, including continuing education requirements
• Experience working with children or adolescents in educational or therapeutic settings.
• Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and special education accommodations.
• Ability to manage challenging behaviors in a calm and supportive manner.
• Completion of trauma-informed care training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
• Completion of crisis intervention training within six (6) months of hire and participation in de-escalation efforts.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic instruction tailored to the individual needs and grade levels of youth clients in the unit.
• Collaborate with school districts, parents/guardians, and treatment teams to obtain and maintain educational records, IEPs/504s, and individualized learning plans.
• Develop short-term educational plans to support cognitive engagement during the stabilization period.
• Create a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment sensitive to trauma and behavioral health needs.
• Adapt lessons and materials to meet the emotional and cognitive needs of youth in crisis.
• Monitor and document academic progress, engagement, and behavioral responses during educational sessions.
• Communicate with youth in a respectful, age-appropriate, and non-judgmental manner.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to discharge planning related to educational reintegration.
• Support youth in developing self-regulation, coping, and executive functioning skills through educational interactions.
• Ensure compliance with educational and confidentiality policies (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.).
