The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides and maintains a safe, therapeutic environment for patients requiring direct observation. Working under the delegation of the Bedside RN, the BHT collaborates with the Nurse, Behavioral Health team, MSW, and Medical Team to carry out the patient’s established behavioral plan. The BHT is trained in verbal de-escalation and situational awareness and receives education on the variety of patient populations encountered. The role is also cross-trained to a limited scope of the Nursing Technician role, including skills and tasks related to daily patient care and activities of daily living. The position is part of the Resource Center, whose team members support the unit of greatest need each day at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and care for a range of patient populations. The role offers the opportunity to support children and families during difficult times by providing care, a supportive environment, and interdisciplinary partnership.
