About The Position

The Behavioral Health Specialist will be responsible for maintaining an active presence on the unit, monitoring clients, completing scheduled activities, and providing emotional support. This role requires understanding and implementing Individual Treatment Plans, intervening in crisis situations, and continuing professional training to maintain necessary certifications.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must complete 40 hours of training in the first 30 days of hire to become a Qualified Behavior Health Specialist.
  • Must be eligible and willing to obtain a CDCA within three months of working in the facility.
  • Must be willing to demonstrate a positive attitude regarding the disease concept of addiction.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with regulations governing the disclosure of client information and storage of client records required.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driving record that does not preclude the employee from being covered from Agency liability insurance.
  • Ability to effectively work with Agency employees, outside contacts, and a diverse client population.

  • Interviewees accepting a position as a Behavioral Health Specialist will need to complete trainings to become a Qualified Mental Health Specialist/Qualified Behavioral Health Specialist (QMHS/QBHS) and a Chemical Dependency Certified Assistant (CDCA).

Responsibilities

  • Read, initial, and date shift reports within the first 60 minutes of shift.
  • Maintain an active presence on the floor by conducting frequent circulations of the unit at a minimum of 30-minute intervals.
  • Monitor clients to detect unusual or harmful behavior and immediately report concerns to supervisory or clinical staff.
  • Check for unsafe conditions and unit cleanliness, and document/correct conditions as required.
  • Complete scheduled activities including focus group activities, counseling groups, intakes, random alco-sensor tests, urine drug screens, dorm searches, and emergency drills.
  • Monitor medication compliance and report/document any non-compliance to clinical and/or medical staff.
  • Listen and provide emotional support and encouragement to all clients.
  • Participate in recreational activities with clients.
  • Encourage clients to attend and participate in clinical, social, educational, or recreational activities.
  • Understand and implement Individual Treatment Plans.
  • Intervene as necessary in crisis situations to protect clients from injuring others, staff, and/or themselves.
  • Continue professional training to stay current in professional developments and maintain required certifications (CDCA, QMHS/QBHS).
