About The Position

The Behavioral Health RN provides direct psychiatric and mental health nursing care to an incarcerated patient population, carrying out treatments and therapies ordered by psychiatric providers. This role supports medication management, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and coordination of behavioral health care within RN scope of practice, collaborating closely with providers, behavioral health staff, and custody in a secure environment.

Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of New Mexico.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Knowledge of behavioral characteristics of mentally ill patients and methods of managing aggressive behavior.
  • Strong assessment, documentation, and critical-thinking skills; ability to function independently and make sound clinical judgments.

Nice To Haves

  • Psychiatric, behavioral health, or correctional experience preferred.
  • Prior correctional behavioral health experience and familiarity with NCCHC standards.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and suicide prevention protocols.
  • Experience supporting MAT/MOUD programs.

Responsibilities

  • Administer nursing processes and procedures that promote, maintain, and restore the well-being of patients.
  • Accurately carry out psychiatric provider orders, including administering psychotropic medications, treatments, and therapies.
  • Assess at-risk patients and identify changes required in the treatment regimen.
  • Assess, plan, monitor, and evaluate the delivery of care using shift reports, the medical record, and direct observation.
  • Participate in suicide prevention, crisis intervention, and restrictive-housing monitoring.
  • Respond to medical and behavioral health emergencies within scope of practice.
  • Collaborate with custody and clinical staff to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Document all required information accurately and timely in accordance with state, facility, and nursing policies.
  • Collaborate with psychiatric providers and behavioral health staff to validate accurate interpretation and processing of orders.
  • Coordinate care with medical, MAT, and case management teams and support continuity of care.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations associated with the pharmacy and dispensing of medication.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to infection control and emergency response protocols.
  • Comply with NCCHC, NMAC, facility policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
