The Emergency Department (ED) Tech Level I is a multi-skilled caregiver who functions under the direction of the professional Registered Nurse. Provides safe, age-appropriate care to the patient by performing various patient care functions and technical procedures. This includes taking vital signs, performing 12-lead EKGs, bedside blood sugar testing, superficial wound care, oral suctioning, splint application, and instructing patients on safe ambulation with crutches. The role requires understanding and practicing aseptic technique for procedures such as urethral catheterization, sterile tray preparation, dressing applications, and all phlebotomy. The ED Tech must be able to operate and observe cardiac monitors for arrhythmias and operate pulse oximetry monitors. Knowledge of specialty instruments, trays, trauma resuscitation equipment, and set-up is necessary. Responsibilities also include transporting patients, unit supplies, equipment, and patient medications, ensuring the patient care area is appropriately stocked, and monitoring patients in restraint/seclusion, documenting observations. The role also involves acting as a Telesitter Facility Liaison, which includes tracking, delivering, maintaining, and retrieving telesitter carts, troubleshooting connectivity issues, performing safe room guideline checks, conducting environmental rounds, responding to telesitter escalations, and notifying the Nurse or charge Nurse when face-to-face redirection is required. The position also involves transporting patients and supplies, and assuring patient care areas are stocked.
