Behavioral Health CNA
About The Position
A Behavioral Health CNA, also referred to as a Psychiatric Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Mental Health CNA, provides care for patients with mental health or behavioral challenges. The role assists patients with daily activities, monitors behavior, and promotes a safe, supportive environment. The CNA collaborates with the healthcare team to provide emotional support, identify changes in patient condition, and help de-escalate potentially critical situations. This is a full-time day-shift role at St Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, with 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Requirements
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant certificate upon hire, required.
- Current BLS upon hire and maintain current.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
Nice To Haves
- Minimum six months of previous experience in an acute care hospital or physician’s office is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with daily activities, including bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, and ambulation.
- Monitor and report changes in behavior, mood, or physical condition to nurses or doctors; observe for signs of agitation, self-harm, or aggression.
- Help maintain a safe, structured environment and use de-escalation techniques to calm distressed or agitated patients.
- Accurately document behavior, interventions, and vital signs, and communicate effectively with the care team.
- Encourage patients to participate in group activities or therapy sessions, offer emotional support, and help build trust with patients.
- Help clean and maintain patient rooms and ensure equipment and supplies are stocked.
