About The Position

The Western School District is currently seeking a Behavior Intervention Support Specialist. This position works closely with administrators, teachers, counselors, and support staff to maintain a safe, supportive, and restorative learning environment. Responsibilities include supervising in-school suspension placements, facilitating sensory breaks outlined in student behavior plans, monitoring lunch/recess detention interventions, and conducting restorative conversations to help students reflect on their behavior and develop positive coping and problem-solving skills.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with children in an educational, behavioral, counseling, youth development, or related setting.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during challenging situations.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Ability to move throughout the school building and playground areas.
  • Ability to accompany students on walks and sensory breaks.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during behavioral crises in accordance with district training and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision and support for students assigned to in-school suspension due to repeated or severe behavioral incidents.
  • Maintain a structured, calm, and supportive environment that promotes accountability, reflection, and continued academic engagement.
  • Assist students in completing assigned academic work during behavioral support placements.
  • Document student behaviors, interventions, and outcomes in accordance with school procedures.
  • Implement scheduled sensory breaks as outlined in individual behavior support plans, IEPs, 504 Plans, or other student support plans.
  • Escort students safely to designated sensory spaces and monitor participation during breaks.
  • Utilize appropriate de-escalation and regulation strategies to support students in returning successfully to the classroom environment.
  • Communicate with teachers and support staff regarding student progress and effectiveness of interventions.
  • Supervise students assigned to lunch and/or recess detention as a result of behavioral infractions.
  • Ensure students follow established detention expectations while maintaining a respectful and supportive environment.
  • Reinforce school-wide behavior expectations and positive decision-making skills.
  • Assist with Arrival and Dismissal, beginning and end of day.
  • Conduct restorative conversations with students following behavioral incidents or detention assignments.
  • Guide students through reflection on their actions, the impact of their behavior on others, and strategies for making amends.
  • Support students in developing self-regulation, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and administrators to facilitate restorative processes when appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, and Behavior Specialist to support student success.
  • Maintain accurate records of interventions, student contacts, and behavioral data.
  • Communicate professionally with school staff.
