About The Position

This position is responsible for behaviorally assessing animals and helping to determine appropriate behavior plans, providing enrichment and training support, and processing behavioral placement of animals within the shelter. This role works across both shelter locations to implement behavior modification protocols, facilitate dog playgroups, address behavior or safety concerns, and support staff and volunteers in animal handling and enrichment.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to animal odors or airborne particles.
  • The noise level in the work environment may occasionally be high.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to ensure each dog designated for playgroup has the opportunity to participate daily by assisting with facilitation, coordinating coverage, or helping identify alternate socialization options when standard playgroup is not possible.
  • Coach staff in animal behavior, handling, restraint, and enrichment.
  • Perform behavior modification and training protocols for animals needing additional care to reach availability.
  • Maintain individual animal records and contribute observations, training progress, and behavior plans in the shelter database.
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to ACC Supervisor or Behavior Manager.
  • Collaborate with other SPCA of Texas departments to support animal movement and quality of life outcomes.
  • Assist the Euthanasia Technician with potentially unsafe animals.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies, and vehicles in safe condition, and report any problems or needed repairs to the ACC Manager.
  • Represent the SPCA of Texas by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Behavior Manager or Director of Behavior.
  • Promote the SPCA of Texas mission with knowledge of programs and services.
  • Safe and appropriate handling of animals using approved techniques and equipment.
  • Provide accurate and timely information regarding animal behavior, training, safety, and handling to staff and volunteers.
  • Use and implementation of approved training procedures under the guidance of the Behavior Supervisor or Behavior Lead.
  • Maintain open and consistent communication with the Behavior Supervisor.
  • Work well both collaboratively and independently in a dynamic shelter environment.
