About The Position

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) is seeking a caring and motivated individual to join our agency as a Behavior Aide for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing at the Kenneth Burdett School for the Deaf in Ogden. This position operates during the school year, from August through May. The Behavior Aide works under the guidance of the Behavior Specialist and Educational Director to support students exhibiting challenging behaviors. This role involves understanding student needs, implementing behavior plans, utilizing reinforcement strategies, and fostering communication skills through various methods, including sign language and visual aids.

Requirements

• Practical knowledge of basic classroom techniques and organization
• American Sign Language (ASL) skills are required for assignments in the ASL classrooms
• Techniques for assisting and providing effective support to classroom instructors
• Practical skills in working effectively with students
• Willingness to learn and receive training on the job
• Experience as an aide, paraprofessional, or other related experience
• Deal with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism
• Work independently
• Ability to follow the teacher's direction and lesson plans
• Communicate clearly and effectively
• Maintain strict confidentiality
• Must be dependable and have good organizational and time-management skills
• Successful completion of a criminal background check
• Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack, etc.

Responsibilities

• Work under the direction of the Behavior Specialist and Educational Director to intervene with students demonstrating challenging behaviors.
• Work closely with the student to understand their specific needs, challenges, and triggers.
• Utilize safe and appropriate procedures when managing students with challenging behavior.
• Interpret and implement written behavior plans.
• Engage in reinforcement strategies to increase the frequency or duration of safe and appropriate replacement behaviors and to build a repertoire of communication, social interaction, and problem-solving skills.
• Utilize and model the implementation of positive behavior supports with students.
• Utilize and model safe and appropriate prompting procedures to promote both successful and independent responding.
• Implement data collection systems, accurately collect and summarize data for the school.
• Collaborate with school team members to provide support effectively, and without disruption to the environment or other individuals in the environment.
• Develop and implement tailored strategies and interventions to address destructive behaviors and promote positive alternatives.
• Facilitate effective communication with the student by using appropriate communication methods (e.g., sign language, visual supports, augmentative and alternative communication systems).
• Foster the student's communication skills to enhance their ability to express needs and wants.
