About The Position

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Before and After School Childcare Floater to join their team. This position supports the YMCA Childcare Program year-round, serving school-age children with various activity options focused on safety, health, social growth, and academic enhancement. The programs are run in various local schools.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years old with a High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience working with children in a childcare setting.
  • Willing to enroll in and complete STARS training within 60 days of employment (i.e. Ongoing 10 hours, 20/30 Hour Basic).
  • Currently certified (with documentation) or willing to certify in Infant-Child CPR and Basic First Aid within 30 days of employment (YMCA will assist in this process).
  • Willing to obtain a Food Handlers permit (cost reimbursable), complete a pre-employment TB skin test with negative results (YMCA will assist in this process) and proof of MMR vaccination (before the first day of employment).
  • Must be able to successfully complete required DCYF background and fingerprint checks before the first day of hire.
  • Able to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on your first day, and other online and in-person training as required.
  • Reliable transportation, the ability to assist at other childcare sites as needed and attend meetings at off-site locations.
  • Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).
  • Knowledge of school-aged child development.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Have or commit to obtaining CPR, Basic First Aid, Food Handlers permit, required STARS trainings, and TB skin tests and maintain throughout employment.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's license, and proof of vehicle insurance required. Must be able to provide a current WA state driving abstract annually as a contingency of employment.
  • Access to reliable transportation is required.
  • Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day, and other online and in-person training as required.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and ongoing employment Fingerprint background clearance, criminal background and national sex offender registry checks.

Responsibilities

  • Support various school sites as needed.
  • Maintain positive public relations with members and represent the best interests and core values of the YMCA.
  • Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents, students, school staff, and peers.
  • Support student goals, academic or otherwise.
  • Lead curriculum and physical activities.
  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and YMCA values, including proximity praise, specific action compliments, Core Values, and 8 Points of Leadership.
  • Maintain site and equipment, including implementing proper cleaning procedures and upkeep of equipment.
  • Directly supervise children at all times and maintain program/site in compliance with state licensing standards.
  • Attend and participate in family nights and program activities.
  • Attend staff meetings at least once a month at an off-site location.
  • Participate in the Annual Campaign by reaching site goal and asking 100% of the parents in the program.
  • Supervise, monitor, and engage with children.
  • Drive personal vehicle to assigned worksite (school) to serve as childcare teacher when needed in the event of a childcare teacher absence.
  • Prepare or assist with preparing supplies and materials in advance for use by children and prepare the classroom for children's use when transitioning from one activity to another.
  • Maintain and clean site location and equipment, including cleaning and sanitizing after snack, washing tables, sweeping floors, moving tables and chairs, storing materials, and locking cabinets, etc.
  • Understand the Washington Administrative Code to ensure program is in compliance at all times.
  • Keep all certifications current.
  • Treat every participant fairly and equally regardless of circumstances and abilities, making each feel good about themselves and encouraging a fun environment.
  • Greet all parents daily and inform them of all program changes. Communicate frequently with parents concerning their child's behavior, academic progress, and socialization in the program.
  • Follow the guidelines, policies, and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, Child Abuse Prevention, and emergencies, in the YMCA parent handbook, and YMCA employee handbook.
  • Dispense medication according to the Medication Authorization Form and maintain accurate records of such. Ensure proper storage of medication according to required standards. Return medication to parents/guardian, as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with licensors, Lead Teachers, and Program Directors.
  • Implement curriculum, providing an integrated, child centered, comprehensive curriculum and multicultural environment, which meets the needs of every child, including those with disabilities.
  • Work a split shift, Monday through Friday.
  • Attend occasional meetings and trainings outside of regular split shift.
  • Set every child up for success; assist in implementing established "Plan of Success" form when needed. Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
  • Meet performance measurement by telling the Y story and raising charitable dollars to fulfill our mission.
  • Assist staff leadership team in reaching campaign goals through recruiting campaigners, making personal asks and supporting branch events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
