About The Position

Howard County Recreation and Parks is seeking an energetic, talented, positive, and motivated director for the 2026-27 school year for their Before and After School Child Care programs at Bushy Park Elementary and Rockburn Elementary. The role involves making a positive impact on the lives of children aged 5-10. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7-9:30 AM and 3:15-6 PM, with mandatory availability for both morning and afternoon sessions for program consistency. This position requires comfort with being active with children, serving as a positive role model, and participating in daily activities. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a background in education, recreation, exercise, sports science, or related fields.

Requirements

  • Minimum age 21.
  • High school diploma, unofficial college transcript, and/or childcare course certificates.
  • 135-hour childcare certification (45-hours in Growth & Development, 45-hours in School Age Curriculum AND 45-hours in Child Care Administration or equivalent).
  • 400-hours supervising school-aged children.
  • Completion certificates for Basic Health and Safety (BHS), current BHS update, Medication Administration, Emergency Preparedness, and Including All Children and the ADA.
  • Must be able to supply any of the required certifications to get qualified by OCC.
  • Must have OR be able to obtain certification in Standard First Aid, CPR and all other training classes required by MSDE Office of Child Care.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous leadership or teaching experience preferred.
  • Background in education, recreation, exercise and/or sports science or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and implementing a well-rounded program adhering to MSDE Office of Child Care licensing regulations, including sports, organized games, art/craft projects, drama, music, science/nature, and healthy cooking activities.
  • Preparing snacks and assisting with homework for youth ages 5-10.
  • Professionally and effectively supervising 4-8 site staff.
  • Providing a safe, positive environment for participants.
  • Directly leading and supervising program staff to ensure all regulations and policies are being followed.
  • Successfully passing a criminal background check, state and federal.
  • Meeting all qualification requirements for the position.
  • Obtaining certification in Standard First Aid, CPR, and all other training classes required by MSDE Office of Child Care.
  • Taking continuing education units each school year.
