Battery Engineering Intern, Cell Engineering (PhD)

Meta•Sunnyvale, CA
•$7,313 - $12,667

About The Position

At Meta Reality Labs, the battery team develops power sources for devices that enable next-generation AI glasses, wearables, and virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. The Battery Cell Engineering Intern will work with cell engineers to investigate how and why lithium-ion battery cells age, with a focus on storage degradation. The project scope will be tailored to the intern’s background and interests. The work will inform cell qualification for future wearable devices and support improved battery longevity and reliability. The internship combines hands-on laboratory work, AI-assisted data analysis, and collaboration across battery engineering teams. Internships last 12 to 24 weeks, with various start dates throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Currently have or be in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. in engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related field, with a focus on battery technology.
  • Hands-on experience with battery testing and characterization.
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion cell chemistry and electrochemistry.
  • Interpersonal skills and experience working effectively in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.
  • Obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout employment.
  • Intend to return to a full-time degree program after completing the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • Research experience in battery aging or degradation.
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools, such as coding assistants or agents, to speed up research or engineering work.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze long-term cell test data to identify degradation trends and insights.
  • Design and run cell-level experiments to understand how and why cells degrade.
  • Use AI tools to speed up and improve data analysis.
  • Recommend improvements to cell testing and qualification.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional battery teams and present findings and recommendations.
