About The Position

In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this internship offers a variety of field and office work opportunities to provide the intern with a diverse breadth of experience applicable to future conservation-related positions. The intern will primarily focus on the study of bat acoustics, utilizing specialized equipment to record echolocation calls above human hearing. This data provides insights into bat species' locations, behavior, distribution, and activity. The role involves deploying acoustic detectors in Minnesota and Wisconsin, analyzing collected data, reviewing previous project data, learning about the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), and studying the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Bat Survey Guidelines. Additionally, the intern may participate in other field surveys, including endangered bumble bee surveys and general monitoring efforts in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  • Must be between the ages of 18-30 (35 if a veteran).
  • Willing to undergo a background check.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Relevant majors: Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, or other similar undergraduate or graduate programs.
  • Experience with collecting biological data in the field.
  • Experience with data analysis.
  • Potential GIS experience.

  • A personal vehicle is optional for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Deploying bat acoustic detectors at various locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Analyzing collected bat acoustic data.
  • Reviewing previous years' project data.
  • Learning about the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat).
  • Reviewing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Bat Survey Guidelines.
  • Participating in other field survey work, such as endangered bumble bee surveys.
  • Contributing to monitoring efforts in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Developing outreach template products (e.g., newsletter, story map) for conservation storytelling.
