About The Position

The Basketball Referee officiates games with a higher level of complexity, ensuring fairness, safety, and sportsmanship among players. The position supports the YMCA’s mission by providing leadership and guidance to sports program participants. The role is based at the South Oakland YMCA.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Thorough knowledge of the sport and ability to enforce rules effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Completion of YMCA Sports Referee Level 1 or 2 training.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

• Experience refereeing sports.
• Previous experience working with children in a supervised setting.

Responsibilities

• Arrive at games at least 15 minutes before the start time.
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of basketball and enforce rules effectively.
• Conduct brief pregame meetings with coaches and facilitate team gatherings.
• Recite the Youth Sports Pledge to promote sportsmanship and respect.
• Create a positive and supportive game environment.
• Stop play when necessary and explain violations consistently and fairly.
• Develop authentic relationships with players, parents, and volunteers.
• Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
• Follow YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and safety procedures.
• Work with varying age groups and manage large groups effectively.
• Attend required staff meetings, training sessions, and other YMCA activities.
• Work evenings and weekends as required.
