About The Position

The bartender is a vital member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s (SLSO) guest food and beverage operation. This position reports to the Food and Beverage Manager and works closely with the Director of Guest Experience and Guest Services Manager to ensure that guests receive exemplary hospitality and bar service prior to each concert and during intermission in the Jack C. Taylor Music Center, as well as select pre- and post-concert add-on experiences. This highly visible position will embrace the opportunity to ensure that SLSO guests have a welcoming, accommodating, and memorable experience. Bartenders require outstanding hospitality skills, proficiency in the safe service of alcoholic beverages and food, and the ability to interact effectively with SLSO patrons, donors, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders at all levels. Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional service for all guests, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
  • Represent the SLSO organization to a wide cross-section of the St. Louis community.
  • Attend scheduled SLSO food and beverage training programs.
  • Anticipate guest needs, intervening in a helpful manner as soon as possible.
  • Make reasonable attempts to resolve guest complaints and concerns or displays of unusual or disruptive behavior.
  • Provide courteous directions to guests based on knowledge of Powell Hall’s layout, accessible routes, and named spaces, especially in newly reopened or unfamiliar spaces.
  • Report at scheduled time dressed in standard SLSO attire with a neat appearance.
  • Perform job duties as outlined in the SLSO Bartender Handbook and checklists. Such activities will include stocking, set up and tear down of beverage stations, attending the Guest Experience Pre-Concert Meeting, restocking and cleaning.
  • Prepare and serve food and beverages, making recommendations to guests and promoting higher quality options when possible.
  • Ensure compliance with all food and beverage regulations (including verifying legal drinking age).
  • Handle credit card transactions and operate the POS system accurately. Reconcile transactions with head bartender as part of closing procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bar, bar tools, and surrounding area.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure excellent overall service.
  • Follow all safety and sanitation policies.
  • Monitor guest behavior and respond to intoxicated guests appropriately and safely.
  • Fulfill role in emergency response situations as outlined in SLSO emergency procedure.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to guest concerns, disruptive behavior, or emergency situations.
