About The Position

Maintains racing receiving barns. This role is responsible for the stabling of horses in the receiving barn, ensuring each horse has a clean stall. The position also involves keeping the area clean and free of trash, including raking and removal of debris. The Barn Worker may also be asked to clean other stabled barns/stalls prior to trainer arrivals and produce reports indicating horse stabling locations. Additionally, the role requires reporting any unsafe conditions and adhering to all safety requirements.

Requirements

  • Less than high school education; or up to one-month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have an outgoing, energetic and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Must be comfortable initiating conversations and creating a fun environment with our guests.
  • Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
  • Responsible for fostering a fun environment.
  • Responsible for being gracious to all guests and co-workers.
  • Responsible for promoting a positive influence in the community and participating in company-sponsored events.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a license from the Indiana Horse Racing Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the stabling of horses in the receiving barn which ship into train or race.
  • Assures that each horse has a clean stall. Requires the removal of hay or shavings and manure to a wheel barrel and then transporting wheel barrel to manure bins.
  • Keeps area clean and free of trash. Includes raking of shed row and exterior of building as well as removal of trash, weeds, grass, etc.
  • When asked, will clean other stabled barns/stalls prior to arrival of trainers shipping in to be stabled at Hoosier Park.
  • Produces reports that show where each horse is to stable while in the receiving barn.
  • Reports any unsafe conditions.
  • Will abide by all safety requirements as outlined in the Safety Manual or as required by individual departments and/or job functions.
