About The Position

A Barista is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble Café team, welcoming customers, answering questions, and helping them choose beverages and café items. The role helps maintain an attractive café presentation and efficient operations, including stocking deliveries, tidying the bake case and dining area, and serving customers professionally at the register. Baristas learn and perform operational duties such as using registers and other technology, merchandising, preparing food and drinks according to recipes and product information, completing cleaning tasks, following FIFO and product-dating practices, and supporting the bookfloor team when needed. The role also involves understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, and seeking support for theft or other store concerns. As their knowledge develops, Baristas build familiarity with café beverages, bakery and savory items, gifting, promotions, customization recommendations, retail options, training tools, and food safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards.
