About The Position

A Barista is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble Café team, welcoming customers, answering questions, recommending beverages and café items, maintaining café presentation, stocking deliveries, tidying the bake case and dining area, and operating registers to provide quick, friendly, professional service. Baristas are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility when scheduling gaps arise, a positive and energetic approach, consideration for colleagues, cheerful customer service, willingness to learn, and enjoyment of the role. The role includes learning and carrying out café operations, such as using registers and other technology, merchandising, preparing food and drinks accurately, receiving and stocking deliveries, completing cleaning tasks, following FIFO and product-dating practices, supporting the bookfloor team, and following loss-prevention and de-escalation procedures. Physical activity includes prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and substantial walking. Baristas may work in other stores when able and when needed to support the wider Cluster. As their experience develops, Baristas build knowledge of café products, promotions, customization recommendations, retail options, training tools, and safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures. The position offers a career path toward Senior Barista as skills and mastery develop. Employees must comply with company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers, answer questions, and help them choose beverages and café items.
Maintain an attractive café presentation, including the counter, retail fixtures, bake case, and dining area.
Operate registers to serve customers quickly, reliably, and professionally.
Receive, unpack, and accurately stock deliveries.
Prepare food and drinks accurately using product information, recipe guides, and team knowledge.
Complete daily and weekly café cleaning tasks and maintain café cleanliness.
Follow FIFO practices and date products consistently and correctly.
Support the bookfloor team when needed and, when able, support other stores in the wider Cluster.
Follow loss-prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques; identify theft or problematic behavior and seek support.
Build knowledge of beverage, bakery, savory, and gifting products, café retail options, and promotions.
Share product and promotion knowledge with customers and colleagues, and recommend food and beverage customizations.
Use café training tools and follow safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines and procedures.
Comply with company policies and procedures.
