About The Position

As a Bankruptcy & Legal Specialist, you will oversee bankruptcy accounts from initial notification through dismissal, discharge, or other resolution. You will review filings, monitor deadlines, prepare and submit required documentation, and work closely with attorneys, trustees, members, and internal teams to protect the credit union's interests while ensuring all actions comply with bankruptcy laws and regulations. This position will primarily focus on Chapters 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcy cases. You will also provide backup support to other areas of the Legal team as needed, including deceased member accounts, levies, garnishments, vehicle repossessions, and collateral recovery. This role is ideal for someone who exercises sound independent judgment, communicates effectively, maintains thorough documentation, and enjoys resolving complex, time-sensitive situations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 3+ years of experience in bankruptcy servicing, collections, legal recovery, or related areas
  • Strong knowledge of bankruptcy laws and processes, including Chapters 7, 11 and 13
  • Strong communication skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Experience working with legal professionals, trustees, vendors and financial systems
  • Ability to analyze complex cases, manage required deadlines, and take timely, compliant action
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful, and comfortable working independently on time-sensitive matters

Responsibilities

  • Process incoming bankruptcy notices, complete required system updates, and communicate time-sensitive information to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcy accounts from initial filing through dismissal, discharge, or other resolution.
  • Review petitions, schedules, plans, and notices to evaluate financial information, collateral, claim treatment, and potential concerns requiring escalation.
  • Prepare and file Proofs of Claim, reaffirmation agreements, and other required documents within court-mandated timeframes.
  • Monitor case activity, including payments, trustee objections, court deadlines, collateral protection, and the execution of required documents.
  • Coordinate with attorneys, trustees, courts, members, and internal departments; refer accounts to outside counsel.
  • Maintain accurate case records and reporting related to bankruptcy filings, case status, reaffirmation rates, charge-offs, and recoveries.
  • Support other Legal team functions as needed, including deceased member accounts, levies, garnishments, repossessions, and collateral recovery.
