About The Position

The Bakery Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Bakery Department, exercising independent judgment and discretion. This role involves championing customer service, planning and directing daily activities, and conducting inspections to ensure compliance with product quality, sanitation, safety, and security standards. Key duties include overseeing and assisting with all bakery production tasks such as proofing, baking, decorating, slicing, and packaging. The manager is also responsible for implementing promotional displays, preventing shrink, controlling expenses, and managing inventory. Administrative tasks include completing and monitoring daily logs, purchase reports, sales and labor reports, and maintaining accurate department records. A significant part of the role involves supervising, motivating, directing, training, and participating in the hiring of Bakery Department personnel, monitoring performance, and recommending personnel actions. The manager communicates sales goals, resolves associate complaints, and ensures compliance with all company policies and procedures. Customer interaction includes assisting with special orders, making product suggestions, handling relations, and resolving complaints. The role also requires ensuring cleanliness and sanitation of the department and equipment, attending training, and implementing emergency procedures.

  • Good understanding of overall Company practices and Bakery Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to judge and react to business activity.
  • Ability to frequently reach, lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 40 pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks.
  • Ability to perform repetitious arm movement required to decorate, prepare and package product.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently and occasionally climb ladders.
  • Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are necessary.
  • Ability to operate related equipment such as: oven, mixers, microwave oven, bread slicer, scales and proof boxes.
  • Ability to use work aids such as knives, scrapers and decorating tools.
  • Ability to use trash compactor and baler.
  • Mental alertness is necessary to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.
  • Knowledge of basic math and weights and measures.
  • Extensive working knowledge of profit and loss statements.
  • Basic knowledge of employment laws and workplace practices.
  • Ability to comply with Company grooming standards and dress code.
  • Ability to utilize cleaning supplies, including chemicals, and equipment.
  • Good attendance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Champion corporate and division customer service programs to meet or exceed division customer service goals.
  • Plan, organize and direct day-to-day operations of the Bakery Department, exercising independent judgment and discretion.
  • Conduct daily inspections of all Bakery department sections and initiate corrective measures to ensure compliance with product quality, code date standards, sanitation, safety and security requirements.
  • Oversee and assist with all bakery department duties such as: proofing, baking, decorating, slicing and packaging fresh bakery products.
  • Implement effective promotional and seasonal displays.
  • Prevent shrink and control expenses.
  • Accurately complete, maintain and monitor daily log sheet, purchase report, and sales and labor and other required paperwork and logs.
  • Maintain records on ad item movement.
  • Order, check, receive and control inventory to ensure adequate product quantity, quality and freshness and maintain inventory levels according to Division directives.
  • Stock and rotate product.
  • Maintain and organize bakery department cooler and freezer.
  • Conduct periodic inventories, process administrative paperwork and maintain accurate department records.
  • Ensure that bakery product quality, baking and decorating standards are met.
  • Ensure proper merchandising of product by understanding and implementing schematics, merchandising of advertised items, proper signing procedures and monitoring product flow.
  • Comply with retail labeling laws, federal and state regulations and Company policies.
  • Follow Company policy in handling quick sale items.
  • Comply with all federal, state and local health and food safety standards.
  • Assist customers by taking and filling special orders.
  • Make product suggestions and engage in suggestive selling.
  • Make intercom announcements.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of sales floor and work area, freezer and cooler, equipment, and retail cases.
  • Handle customer relations.
  • Engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
  • Monitor daily log sheet, purchase report and sales and labor report.
  • Attend required training and sales meetings.
  • Implement emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions.
  • Supervise, motivate, direct, train and participate in the hiring of Bakery Department personnel.
  • Monitor associate performance and effectively recommend personnel action to store director such as hiring, firing, layoff and disciplinary action.
  • Identify and train associates with high potential for advancement opportunities.
  • Schedule personnel to ensure adequate coverage and service levels.
  • Communicate sales goals, department performance and sales opportunities to department associates to ensure positive results.
  • Comply with and ensure compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Resolve associate complaints where appropriate and report action taken to Store Director.
  • Immediately report any potential serious policy violations, for matters including but not limited to working off the clock, harassment, food safety and sanitation, discrimination etc. to the Store Director and assist in appropriate handling.
  • Answer and respond to incoming calls appropriately.
  • Receive and appropriately resolve customer complaints and report to the Store Director as appropriate.
  • Perform all job duties with honesty and integrity and in compliance with Company policies and procedures.
