Under the general supervision of the Supervisor and the technical direction and guidance of the Senior Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector, this role is responsible for the continuing implementation, promotion, and enforcement of the City’s Backflow Prevention Program. The position also carries out duties specifically relating to plumbing and mechanical systems in regard to the application and enforcement of the Ontario Building Code as an inspector. This role involves administering, maintaining, and enforcing the Backflow Prevention Program, and furthering its development and implementation, including conducting and facilitating public awareness programs. The officer will liaise with and provide technical direction to service providers, other city sectors, and the general public regarding backflow prevention installations. A key responsibility includes reviewing proposals for premise isolation and cross connection control surveys for compliance with the Ontario Building Code, recognized standards, and the City’s Waterworks By-law. The position also involves preparing and issuing reports, letters, and orders related to on-site inspections and program implementation, and acting as the City’s representative with the Ontario Backflow Prevention Association. Additionally, the role includes performing plumbing and mechanical inspector functions for buildings within the scope of OBC Part 9 and other basic plumbing to supplement workload or address overload situations, and performing other related duties as assigned.
