Backend/Infra Engineer

Ostium LabsNew York, NY

About The Position

Ostium is looking for a mid-level infrastructure/backend engineer to spearhead our ambitious efforts on the infrastructure side. This engineer will work on migrating applications from a legacy infrastructure to a robust, new infrastructure, using 100% IaC to build, maintain, deploy, and manage applications and services. The role involves decreasing latency, increasing visibility, and finding ways to give the company a competitive edge with real financial impact. A key aspect of this role is empowering every developer at Ostium to self-serve their infrastructure needs, such as deploying new applications, requesting new infrastructure, and monitoring/alerting. The goal is to build a state-of-the-art infrastructure layer that allows engineers to self-serve 90% of their infrastructure needs, enabling the engineer to focus on higher-level projects and ambitious goals.

Requirements

  • Core infrastructure fundamentals (security, networking, access control, etc.)
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes and Kubernetes best practices
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform, ArgoCD, GitHub Actions, Docker, Dagster, Prometheus, and Grafana
  • Evangelist of Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Experience writing backend applications in Golang
  • Experience with Postgres, Clickhouse
  • Security Minded — Always looking to decrease security attack vectors.
  • AI Power Users — Not a vibe coder, someone who leverages AI effectively, validates outputs, and builds guardrails.
  • Solution Oriented — Engineers will have requests and needs; it's our job to make sure they can move as fast as possible.
  • Prioritize and Act — Be a leader and take stock of what's needed, what will deliver the most value, and propose your own work and path forward.
  • Humble and Willing to Learn — Be willing to learn from quants, engineers, the ops team, and everyone at this company about everything. We have no room in this company for people stuck in their ways.
  • Winner — This is a team sport, and there is a very real scoreboard. We want people who don't care about scoring the most points. They only care about the team winning and will do whatever it takes.
  • Disagree and Commit — Your voice will be heard and so will all your proposals and plans. But once a decision has been made, whether you agree or not, we expect 100% effort in execution.

Responsibilities

  • Migrating applications from a legacy infrastructure to a robust, new infrastructure.
  • Using 100% IaC to build, maintain, deploy, and manage applications and services.
  • Decreasing latency, increasing visibility, and finding ways to give us an edge (real financial impact on the business).
  • Empowering every single developer at Ostium to self-serve: deploy new applications, request new infrastructure, monitor and alert.
  • Improving the new stack by finding holes and gaps, prioritizing them, and filling them.
  • Maturing the Stack Orchestrator tool so developers can run their application in 10 different ways locally and work effectively with multiple agents in parallel.
  • Decreasing latency for critical path applications, which involves working with app teams and writing application code.
  • Ensuring reliability and security by constantly thinking like a hacker and leveraging AI tools and existing tools to coordinate contained attacks on the system.
