Backend/Infra Engineer

Ostium LabsNew York, NY

About The Position

Ostium is seeking a mid-level infrastructure/backend engineer to lead their infrastructure initiatives. This role involves migrating applications to a new, robust infrastructure using 100% Infrastructure as Code (IaC). The engineer will focus on reducing latency, enhancing visibility, and improving business financial impact. A key aspect of the role is empowering all developers at Ostium with self-service capabilities for deploying applications, requesting infrastructure, and managing monitoring and alerting. The goal is to build a state-of-the-art infrastructure layer enabling developers to handle 90% of their infrastructure needs independently, allowing them to concentrate on higher-level projects and company objectives.

Requirements

  • Core infrastructure fundamentals (security, networking, access control, etc.)
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes and Kubernetes best practices
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform, ArgoCD, GitHub Actions, Docker, Dagster, Prometheus, and Grafana
  • Evangelist of Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Experience writing backend applications in Golang
  • Experience with Postgres, Clickhouse
  • Security Minded — Always looking to decrease security attack vectors.
  • AI Power Users — Not a vibe coder, someone who leverages AI effectively, validates outputs, and builds guardrails.
  • Solution Oriented — Engineers will have requests and needs; it's our job to make sure they can move as fast as possible.
  • Prioritize and Act — Be a leader and take stock of what's needed, what will deliver the most value, and propose your own work and path forward.
  • Humble and Willing to Learn — Be willing to learn from quants, engineers, the ops team, and everyone at this company about everything. We have no room in this company for people stuck in their ways.
  • Winner — This is a team sport, and there is a very real scoreboard. We want people who don't care about scoring the most points. They only care about the team winning and will do whatever it takes.
  • Disagree and Commit — Your voice will be heard and so will all your proposals and plans. But once a decision has been made, whether you agree or not, we expect 100% effort in execution.

Responsibilities

  • Migrating applications from a legacy infrastructure to a robust, new infrastructure.
  • Using 100% IaC to build, maintain, deploy, and manage applications and services.
  • Decreasing latency, increasing visibility, and finding ways to give us an edge (real financial impact on the business).
  • Empowering every single developer at Ostium to self-serve: deploy new applications, request new infrastructure, monitor and alert.
  • Improving the new stack by identifying and filling holes and gaps.
  • Maturing an in-house tool for testing and validation of stack components locally.
  • Decreasing latency for critical path applications by working with app teams and writing application code.
  • Enhancing reliability and security by thinking like a hacker and using AI tools to coordinate contained attacks on the system.
