About The Position

Apple Services Engineering builds and operates large-scale observability platforms that monitor the health of Apple services, including Apple TV, the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, Podcasts, and Fitness+. This software engineering role focuses on building tools that proactively identify and diagnose service disruptions across Apple’s global cloud infrastructure. Real-time data pipelines and services detect potential issues, while analytics provide a trusted record of service health and insights for executive-level decisions.

The Backend Engineer will contribute to the design, development, and scaling of critical backend services and real-time data pipelines processing petabytes of data. The role builds tools and interfaces that help Apple engineers ensure service reliability and works with teams across Apple services to provide observability for new and expanding business lines. The engineer will tackle complex challenges, learn to navigate ambiguity, and collaborate with and mentor fellow engineers. Requirements

• A track record of building and delivering exceptional software, gained through a related technical degree, a non-traditional educational path, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience building and scaling high-performance backend services and APIs, such as GraphQL, REST, or gRPC.
• Experience with JVM languages such as Java, Scala, or Kotlin; experience with Go, Python, or Swift is also valued.
• Experience designing and building large-scale data pipelines for batch or stream processing.
• Proficiency in designing and building cloud-native distributed systems, including microservices, container orchestration, and event-driven patterns.
• Strong fundamentals in data systems, with experience using relational and NoSQL databases.
• Commitment to high-quality software ownership, including thorough testing, effective CI/CD, and performance tuning.
• Understanding of security fundamentals and commitment to building secure, resilient software.
• Passion for mentoring engineers and fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
• Passion for product excellence and deeply understanding customer needs.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with Apache Spark or Apache Flink for batch or stream processing.
• Experience with Kubernetes and Kafka.
• Experience with modern observability practices and tools such as Splunk, Grafana, or Prometheus, and ability to troubleshoot complex issues in large-scale systems.
• Experience with modern frontend development using frameworks such as React, Vue, or Svelte, or native macOS/iOS development using Swift.
• Curiosity about applying emerging technologies such as generative AI to engineering challenges.
