About The Position

We are seeking a Backend Engineer to design, develop, test, deploy, and support production-grade software applications using Java and/or Python in AWS cloud environments. The role combines software engineering fundamentals with hands-on development of APIs and backend services, Terraform-based cloud infrastructure management, and relational or NoSQL database experience. The engineer will contribute to system design, secure coding, automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, and production incident resolution. The role involves collaboration with product, QA, SRE/operations, and security teams. This is an onsite position in Jersey City, New Jersey. Local candidates are preferred. Work authorization preference is U.S. citizen, Green Card, or GC EAD. The position requires W2 employment; C2C, 1099, and third-party profiles are not accepted.

Requirements

Strong proficiency in Java and/or Python, including object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design fundamentals.
Hands-on experience developing, testing, deploying, and supporting production applications.
Practical AWS cloud experience deploying or operating backend services.
Experience designing, developing, and consuming APIs.
Familiarity with microservices and/or event-driven architectures.
Experience with Terraform or comparable infrastructure-as-code tooling.
Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including backend data modeling.
Understanding of secure coding, production troubleshooting, performance, logging, and monitoring.
Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively on technical design and delivery.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Kafka, Amazon SQS/SNS, Kinesis, MQ, or other messaging/eventing platforms.
Experience with Docker, containers, and CI/CD tools.
Knowledge of unit testing, integration testing, and test-driven development.
Familiarity with REST, gRPC, metrics, distributed tracing, and observability.
Experience working in enterprise or financial-services engineering environments.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain production-grade backend applications using Java and/or Python.
Build and maintain APIs, microservices, and cloud-based backend solutions on AWS.
Write secure, maintainable, high-quality code and participate in peer code reviews.
Troubleshoot application and infrastructure issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes.
Contribute to system design, service architecture, performance optimization, and reliability improvements.
Use Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools to provision and manage cloud resources and environments.
Develop and maintain automated tests and contribute to CI/CD pipeline improvements.
Work with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including data modeling and query optimization.
Apply secure coding practices, logging, monitoring, error handling, and resilience patterns.
Use approved AI-assisted engineering tools when appropriate, validating generated code and recommendations for security, correctness, and performance.
Document technical decisions and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
