About The Position

The Backend Engineer (PHP / Laravel) designs, develops, and maintains scalable, reliable server-side applications, with a focus on system performance and stability. The role takes ownership of features and services, troubleshoots complex issues, optimizes existing code, and contributes to architectural decisions. The engineer collaborates with front-end development, product, QA, and DevOps teams in a remote-first, fast-paced environment, working synchronously and asynchronously to deliver high-quality software.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional experience with PHP and the Laravel framework.
  • Experience working with AWS services such as Lambdas, SES, and Workers.
  • Solid knowledge of RESTful APIs and the ability to write automated API tests.
  • A degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Deep experience with SQL databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including schema design, queries, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to use AI tools to improve productivity without relying on them to perform the work.
  • Experience with Git and collaborative GitHub workflows, including CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated tests into deployment processes.
  • Experience working with Docker.
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools such as Rollbar and CloudWatch.
  • Located in the US and able to work full-time for a US employer without requiring visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize high-throughput RESTful APIs in PHP using Laravel, and write efficient PostgreSQL queries and schema designs for data-intensive clinical workflows.
  • Contribute to feature development and platform improvements within an Agile/Scrum process.
  • Build and maintain third-party API and internal-service integrations, deploying and operating services in Docker containers across AWS or comparable cloud environments.
  • Write unit, integration, and API-level automated tests for backend functionality and critical clinical workflows, and integrate tests into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation, including troubleshooting guides, fixes, API integrations, and support processes.
  • Monitor application health, performance, and error logs with tools such as Rollbar and AWS CloudWatch, and address potential issues proactively.
  • Identify, document, and track software defects; analyze logs and debug to find root causes; and work with the development team to prioritize and resolve issues during Agile/Scrum sprints.
  • Participate in code reviews and uphold coding standards and engineering best practices.
  • Evaluate and improve development processes, CI/CD pipelines, and tooling, including Docker, monitoring and logging systems, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Identify opportunities to formalize and document internal processes, workflows, and troubleshooting playbooks, building a knowledge base that supports onboarding and consistent support.
