About The Position

Textmagic is an Estonian SaaS company building business communication tools used by more than 25,000 companies worldwide. The company is publicly listed on Nasdaq First North Tallinn. The Backend Engineer will join the team to develop and maintain its live SaaS product, build new features, improve existing systems, and help keep the platform fast and reliable. The position is open to strong mid-level and senior engineers.

The role focuses primarily on PHP and Symfony. The engineer will develop backend features, REST APIs, and third-party integrations; improve existing code; investigate performance issues and optimize database queries; and build and improve background jobs, message processing, and error handling. The role includes writing clean, testable code and collaborating with engineering, QA, DevOps, and product colleagues to deliver reliable solutions.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience with PHP and Symfony in production applications.
• Good understanding of PostgreSQL or other relational databases.
• Experience developing REST APIs and working with external services.
• Solid knowledge of object-oriented programming, application design, and clean coding practices.
• Ability to investigate problems, understand existing code, and find practical solutions.
• Good spoken and written English, plus either Estonian or Russian.
• Proactive, independent, team-oriented, and reliable approach to work.
• Ability to organize work, make sound technical decisions, and take responsibility for results.
• Comfort using AI coding tools and reviewing and verifying their output.
• Ability to communicate ideas clearly, discuss approaches, and give and accept constructive feedback.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with high-load systems and performance optimization.
• Knowledge of message queues and asynchronous processing.
• Experience optimizing SQL queries and working with large databases.
• Experience with automated testing, particularly Codeception or PHPUnit.
• Experience with Redis, Docker, or high-availability systems.
• Experience with Go.
• Experience with Temporal or other durable workflow engines.
• Experience with LLM APIs and the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend features, REST APIs, and third-party integrations.
• Improve existing PHP/Symfony code so it is easier to maintain and extend.
• Investigate performance issues and optimize database queries.
• Build and improve background jobs, message processing, and error handling.
• Write clean, testable code and participate in code reviews.
• Work with engineers, QA, DevOps, and product managers to deliver reliable solutions.
