About The Position

Atoms is hiring a Back-End Engineer for its Fleet Management engineering team, which builds software to help operators understand, manage, and scale autonomous fleets in real-world environments. The role focuses on developing the services, APIs, data systems, and platform capabilities behind the Fleet Management product, connecting complex operational data to software used to manage autonomous fleets in the field. The engineer will own backend problems end to end, make architectural decisions, and collaborate closely with product-facing engineers, users, and operational stakeholders. The work includes designing, building, deploying, observing, and operating reliable systems, investigating production issues, and contributing to the platform’s technical direction and engineering standards. The role is based onsite at Atoms’ San Francisco office five days per week.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building production backend systems.
  • Experience designing APIs, services, data models, and distributed or data-intensive systems.
  • Strong understanding of system design, reliability, performance, and engineering tradeoffs.
  • Experience working with databases and designing systems around complex or high-volume data.
  • Generalist engineering instincts and willingness to work beyond a narrowly defined backend boundary when needed.
  • Ability to operate effectively in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment with a high degree of ownership.
  • Strong communication skills and a track record of driving meaningful technical projects from design through production.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with fleet management, logistics, robotics, autonomous vehicles, or other operationally complex systems.
  • Experience with real-time, streaming, telemetry, or event-driven architectures.
  • Experience building data platforms or systems that support operational decision-making.
  • Experience incorporating AI/ML capabilities or AI-enabled developer workflows into production systems.
  • Startup or zero-to-one engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs that power fleet-management products and workflows.
  • Develop reliable data models, pipelines, and service integrations for operational and fleet data.
  • Own backend systems from architecture and implementation through deployment, observability, and ongoing operation.
  • Design systems for reliability, scalability, debuggability, and clear operational ownership.
  • Partner with full-stack and product engineers to define clean interfaces and enable fast product development.
  • Work with engineering and operational stakeholders to understand real-world requirements and develop robust technical solutions.
  • Use modern AI-assisted engineering tools and emerging technologies to accelerate development and improve system capabilities.
  • Investigate complex production issues across services, data, and system boundaries and drive them to resolution.
  • Contribute to technical direction and engineering standards as the Fleet Management platform grows.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance.
  • Flexible Spending Account / Health Savings Account options.
