About The Position

The Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of AVTEC, is recruiting for an Industrial Electricity Instructor located in Seward. This position is in the Alaska Vocational Technical Teacher's Unit (AVTECTA). The Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) trains Alaskans for work in the trades with the motto 'start a career in less than a year'. The mission is to deliver flexible, accessible and affordable workforce training that is responsive to the dynamic needs of business and industry and service Alaska's diverse communities. The instructor will be responsible for planning, developing, and delivering instruction in the Industrial Electricity and Building Trades programs. Duties will include learning, maintaining and developing program curriculum; designing, building, and maintaining the practical industry-based labs and shop areas; facilitating program advisory board meetings; and maintaining student training records.

Requirements

  • Four years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field.
  • OR A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in the applicable field; AND Two years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field; AND Two years professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs.
  • OR An industry recognized professional certification in the applicable field; AND Two years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field; AND Two years professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs.
  • Expertise in a particular vocational field such as the culinary arts, business or office technology, applied technology, information technology, maritime operations or safety, medical services, construction, or the trades.
  • Ability to complete or be willing to learn the math requirements for two semesters of High School Algebra. Geometry, Algebra 2, and Trigonometry are also recommended.

  • Knowledge of teaching, training, making presentations, lecturing, assessing student learning and mastery of skills and other instructional methods.
  • Ability to make clear and convincing oral presentations and listen effectively; clarify information as needed.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, benefits, repair, operation, and maintenance.
  • Ability to help others learn through formal or informal methods; identify training needs; provide constructive feedback; coach others on how to perform tasks; act as a mentor.
  • Ability to use knowledge acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information related to the job; advise others on technical issues.
