About The Position

Travelers is seeking an AVP & Data Scientist to lead a team applying advanced statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms to improve organizational intelligence and support business decisions. The role leads a portfolio of projects and managers, presents insights and recommendations to executives, and collaborates with technology partners to bring analytics into marketplace products.

The position also partners with enterprise stakeholders to develop benchmarks from Travelers work in areas such as underwriting, claims, and coding. It evaluates frontier models, TravelersLLM, and fine-tuned models against those benchmarks, and works with platform and business teams to determine how workloads should move between models as vendors update or retire them. This includes regression testing and balancing cost, latency, and quality.

Requirements

• A master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Decision Sciences, Actuarial Science, or a related analytical STEM field, plus seven years of experience, or a suitable and equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Heavy concentration in mathematics, including statistics and programming, business intelligence/analytics, and data science tools and research using large data sets.
• Additional verification of specific coursework is required.
• Industry expertise in modeling, research, analytics, or actuarial work.
• Industry-level knowledge of value creation and business model concepts.
• Ability to interact regularly with executives and/or major customers using negotiating or influencing skills.
• Subject matter expertise in the majority of external software programs.
• Ability to apply emerging statistical procedures to large, highly complex work.

Nice To Haves

• Master's degree in a STEM-related field or equivalent.
• 10 or more years of related work experience, including 6 or more years of team leadership experience.
• Recognized industry expertise in two or three of the following: regression, classification, machine vision, natural language processing, deep learning, and statistical modeling.

Responsibilities

• Present analysis, insights, results, and recommendations to executives to inform decisions.
• Anticipate potential objections and influence executives to adopt a different point of view.
• Own a portfolio of projects and a team of managers and leaders, making recommendations that influence business outcomes.
• Drive teams and leaders to execute data science strategies successfully.
• Identify organizational tension and build consensus across the organization.
• Assist in developing business plans for the portfolio.
• Influence outcomes in the line of business and/or data science community through discussions, presentations, or peer reviews.
• Lead team recruiting, training, and talent assessment efforts.
• Guide and coach team members, advance their subject matter expertise, and identify future leaders.
• Support sharing knowledge and best practices across the enterprise.
• Partner with enterprise stakeholders to design benchmarks based on Travelers work, such as underwriting, claims, and coding, and measure frontier models, TravelersLLM, and fine-tuned models against them.
• Collaborate with platform and line-of-business teams to define how and when workloads move between models as vendors release new versions and retire old ones, including regression testing and cost, latency, and quality trade-offs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
