AVP, Community Resilience

Chubb•Readington Township, NJ
•$133,350 - $192,150

About The Position

Chubb is recruiting multiple AVP, Community Resilience professionals with complementary expertise across natural hazards, resilient design, engineering, planning, and data analytics. The role advances Chubb’s Community Resilience Initiative by helping communities reduce natural catastrophe risk and strengthen resilience under a changing climate. It combines technical expertise and project management to identify community needs, evaluate mitigation opportunities, and manage projects connecting physical risk reduction with insurance outcomes. The position reports to the Vice President, Community Resilience and collaborates with internal colleagues across risk consulting, underwriting, catastrophe modeling, claims, and analytics, as well as external technical specialists and community partners. Each individual portfolio will reflect the hire’s expertise and the initiative’s needs. Depending on background, work may emphasize design, engineering, and planning, or data and analytics. The role requires translating risk information and technical findings into practical, credible guidance and actionable community measures. The AVP manages projects from scoping and partner engagement through assessment, resilience planning, implementation support, and evaluation; applies subject matter expertise to natural-hazard risk reduction; connects proposed mitigation with potential insurance outcomes; and helps develop partnerships and repeatable approaches that can be used across communities. The position involves travel for site visits, project delivery, and partner engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, urban or regional planning, geography, GIS, data science, environmental science, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant professional experience in community resilience, natural hazard mitigation, resilient design, engineering, planning, climate risk analytics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in either applying architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, or planning skills to reduce natural-hazard risk, or applying quantitative, geospatial, or catastrophe risk analysis to community resilience and understanding how analytical findings inform physical mitigation and implementation.
  • Working knowledge of wildfire, coastal or inland flooding, wind, or severe storms and their effects on buildings, infrastructure, landscapes, and communities.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including responsibility for scopes, schedules, multidisciplinary teams, and delivery of substantive project outcomes.
  • Experience working with community partners or other external stakeholders on projects involving multiple organizations and competing priorities.
  • Ability to evaluate technical information and translate it into clear, feasible recommendations.
  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including the ability to explain risk and uncertainty to nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, propose solutions when the path is unclear, and adapt to changing information and requirements.
  • Willingness to travel for site visits, project delivery, and partner engagement.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to learn, take direction, and contribute to team success.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional licensure or certification relevant to the candidate’s discipline, such as RA, PLA, PE, AICP, GISP, CFM, or PMP.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience moving resilience recommendations into implementation.
  • Familiarity with property insurance, catastrophe modeling, loss prevention, or the relationship between risk mitigation and underwriting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead assigned community resilience projects from initial scoping and partner engagement through assessment, resilience planning, implementation support, and outcome evaluation.
  • Develop and manage work plans, schedules, budgets, consultant scopes, deliverables, and project dependencies.
  • Establish clear responsibilities across internal teams and external partners, maintain project momentum, and resolve delivery issues.
  • Translate technical findings into specific actions, responsible parties, implementation milestones, and measures of success.
  • Provide clear updates to leadership and partners, identifying decisions needed, emerging challenges, and recommended next steps.
  • Assess how natural hazards, building and site conditions, land use, infrastructure, and surrounding landscapes contribute to community risk.
  • Bring subject matter expertise to projects and engage specialists when additional disciplines or peril expertise are needed.
  • Evaluate property-, neighborhood-, and community-scale mitigation opportunities based on effectiveness, feasibility, cost, maintenance, and implementation requirements.
  • Consider long-term resilience, future climate conditions, and the useful life of proposed investments beyond minimum code compliance and current conditions.
  • Help communities prioritize actions within their control and identify measures requiring coordination with neighbors, HOAs, utilities, public agencies, or other partners.
  • For design, engineering, and planning assignments, conduct field assessments; review plans and technical studies; develop resilience concepts and implementation guidance; and evaluate how buildings, sites, landscapes, and infrastructure can be adapted to reduce risk.
  • For data and analytics assignments, integrate hazard, exposure, vulnerability, geospatial, and other relevant data; work with modelers to evaluate resilience scenarios; and develop analyses, maps, and decision tools that inform community priorities and investment.
  • Apply sound judgment, explain uncertainty, and connect technical work to practical decisions.
  • Work with engineering, catastrophe modeling, and underwriting colleagues to assess how proposed interventions may affect physical damage, expected losses, and property and community insurability.
  • Help assemble technical evidence and documentation needed to evaluate and recognize completed risk reduction measures.
  • Support development of metrics tracking implementation, performance, and potential changes in insurance availability, capacity, or affordability.
  • Communicate findings accurately, distinguishing demonstrated outcomes from anticipated benefits requiring further analysis or verification.
  • Build productive relationships with community associations, local governments, property owners, developers, utilities, technical consultants, and other implementation partners.
  • Facilitate working sessions that turn differing perspectives and priorities into shared decisions and actionable plans.
  • Prepare clear reports, presentations, maps, and other materials for technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Capture project lessons and contribute to assessment methods, technical guidance, and delivery approaches that can be applied across additional communities.
  • Evaluate relevant tools and emerging solutions and help identify opportunities for practical pilots.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Potential eligibility to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program.
