Avionics Technician
About The Position
Barfield is hiring an Avionics Technician to support its Mechanical department. The Avionics Test Technician supports maintenance and calibration of aircraft avionics using ATEC (Automatic Test Equipment Complex) Series 5 and 6 workstations. The role requires an Associate Certified Electronics Technician (CET) credential, computer literacy, and knowledge of ATLAS (Abbreviated Test Language for All Systems) to execute and troubleshoot automated test procedures. The position involves operating automated test programs to diagnose Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), performing component-level troubleshooting and precision soldering on PCBAs, and documenting test results and calibration certificates in aviation maintenance software. The technician works with limited supervision and reports to the Shop Lead Technician or Shop Manager.
Requirements
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience in an MRO-approved FAA Part 145 repair station environment.
- Ability to follow written maintenance instructions approved by FAA/OEM data.
- Ability to solder and de-solder through-hole-mounted and surface-mounted electronic components.
- Knowledge of test equipment required for the position.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English, and knowledge of basic math.
- Active ETA-I Associate Certified Electronics Technician (CETa) credential.
- Proficiency with oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal generators.
- Computer literacy and a strong grasp of ATLAS programming language.
Nice To Haves
- Experience using ATLAS compilers to translate high-level test requirements into machine-level instructions for the test bench.
- IPC-A-610 or J-STD-001 qualification.
- Associate degree in Electronics Technology or equivalent military training, such as Navy AT or Air Force Avionics.
Responsibilities
- Execute automated test programs on the ATEC platform to diagnose Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).
- Use software environments such as Spherea’s ATEC suite or NI TestStand.
- Interpret ATLAS source code to determine whether failed tests result from hardware defects or software/connection errors.
- Perform component-level troubleshooting and precision soldering on PCBAs based on diagnostic results.
- Maintain digital logs of test results and calibration certificates using specialized aviation maintenance software.
