About The Position

An Avionics Technician I operates, installs, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs all on-aircraft electronic and electrical systems; develops, fabricates, tests, modifies, and integrates electronic flight hardware into research and science aircraft, simulators, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and associated payload systems, and in back-shop environments. The role requires compliance with all mandated certification requirements, including safety training, guidance on local processes, and general project orientation. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Level 1 Certification in ESD Protection (Electrostatic)
  • May require a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airplane and/or Powerplant certification
  • May require an FCC GROL Certification
  • 2 years of aircraft maintenance experience with fixed wing commercial, Government or DOD aircraft required.
  • Communication skills required to interface and coordinate with the Operations engineers and other technically qualified personnel.
  • Physically capable of working in confined spaces.
  • Able to pass a NASA administered physical
  • Must obtain and maintain NASA Workmanship Certifications: IPC J-STD-001FS, NASA-STD-8739.1, -8739.5 and -8739.4 or equivalent replacement standard i.e. IPC/WHMA-A-620.
  • Successfully complete an annual eye exam IAW NASA-STD-8739.6.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a Class II Flight Physical and successfully complete physiological and land and water survival training.
  • Possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Able to obtain and maintain CPR certification.
  • Electrical and electronic malfunction troubleshooting skills.
  • Systems knowledge should include, aircraft radar, communications, navigation, flight control (autopilot), flight Management, and flight display systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of advanced electronic principles and circuit analysis along with the ability to interpret schematic diagrams, engineering drawings and charts of assigned systems.
  • Required to trace signal flow and understand interrelationships of circuits.
  • Demonstrable soldering, cable, crimp and harness (CCH) fabrication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Use NASA’s automated maintenance data system (NAMIS) to maintain equipment records, and document maintenance actions for all avionics and aircraft electrical repairs to NASA assigned aircraft.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, testing, inspection, repair and integration of aircraft electrical, electronic, computer systems, and research test equipment and payloads in NASA assigned research aircraft platforms.
  • Inspect, test, and operate avionic and electrical test equipment to ensure serviceability, proper operation and ensure test equipment calibration schedules are up to date.
  • Troubleshoot, Test and overhaul: NASA Operations VHF/UHF radios, Pro-panels, Aircraft Navigation Radios, Radio Management Systems, T38 relay panels, PFD/EED, Super Guppy EFIS, Air data Computers, Transponders and Distance Measuring Equipment.
  • Be familiar with Engineering Work orders (EWO’s) and be able to complete required instructions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Troubleshoot and Repair J85 Jet Engine Test Cell.
  • Troubleshoot and Repair NASA T38 Aircraft simulator
  • Remove, disassemble, repair, clean, treat for corrosion, assemble, and reinstall avionics and aircraft electrical components and accessories.
  • Update, program and maintain navigational and flight management system databases on assigned aircraft.
  • Dispose of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local, and federal environmental standards and regulations.
  • Practice good housekeeping, tool control, Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention in accordance with company and NASA policies and procedures.
  • Inspect and maintain aircraft batteries and test equipment.
  • Perform scheduled and un-scheduled aircraft maintenance inspections and repairs as required.
  • Perform aircraft ground support duties, including towing, marshalling and jacking aircraft.
  • Perform maintenance on aircraft, including avionics, and/or ground support equipment.
  • Repair, inspect and maintain electrical elements of the aircraft.
  • Troubleshoot systems as required to meet customer needs.
  • Document maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain control tools.
  • Report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor.
  • Inventory and inspect tools on a regular basis and replace worn or broken tools.
  • Comply with safety rules and regulations while performing day to day maintenance.
  • Promptly report all accidents, injuries, safety violations, and/or unsafe practices or procedures to supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
