Avionics System Engineer, HITL (Starfall)

SpaceX•Hawthorne, CA
•$105,000 - $170,000

About The Position

The Avionics System Engineer, HITL (Starfall) develops Hardware in the Loop (HITL) systems that bring real hardware together in a complete system so software, hardware, and vehicle systems can be validated. The Starfall HITL systems incorporate avionics flight hardware, racks, servers, power supplies, and custom simulators, providing a platform for vehicle design validation and supporting development of a reliable reentry vehicle. The role develops and monitors HITL systems for in-house avionics hardware, automates software deployment, designs vehicle-like avionics harnesses, and troubleshoots electrical hardware issues in a fast-paced production environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or physics.
  • At least 1 year of experience with hardware development or electronics test engineering through professional experience, internships, research, or projects outside the classroom.
  • At least 1 year of Python programming experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing avionics systems on vehicles, including system definition and harness drawings.
  • Experience with electrical test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and power supplies.
  • Experience troubleshooting sensors, actuators, and electrical components.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software.
  • Fluency in Python for automating test or analysis tasks.
  • Self-motivation and strong multitasking, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere.
  • Operations experience in flight test, piloting aircraft, or controlling other high-consequence systems in real time.

Responsibilities

  • Develop HITL systems for in-house-developed avionics hardware products intended to fly to space.
  • Develop software to monitor and validate the performance of HITL hardware systems, including off-the-shelf equipment and flight avionics.
  • Develop Python automation to deploy software to avionics boxes in the HITL system and to PXI chassis in racks.
  • Design HITL harnessing that connects avionics boxes in a manner similar to the flight vehicle.
  • Triage, troubleshoot, identify root causes, and repair electrical hardware issues on HITL tables on an aggressive production schedule.
  • Drive future improvements to prevent the recurrence of hardware issues.

Benefits

  • Potential long-term incentives in the form of company stock or long-term cash awards.
