About The Position

Peraton is seeking an experienced Aviation Weather Systems Engineer to support modernization efforts under the FAA Brand New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS) contract. The role provides high-level systems engineering and engineering integration for the Alaska Weather Needs Package, coordinating engineering execution, field activities, technical documentation, and interfaces between aviation weather observation systems—including AWOS, VWOS, and WCAM—and the National Airspace System (NAS). The engineer supports data-flow integrity, system interactions, program execution visibility, risk management, and strategic alignment with the No Excuses Exceptional Delivery Standard (NEEDS). Working in partnership with the Weather Workstream Lead, the engineer coordinates multidisciplinary teams, schedules, deliverables, and technical decision-making. The role also involves collaboration with FAA stakeholders, engineering teams, subcontractors, installation partners, and internal functional organizations throughout the project lifecycle. This position is onsite in Washington, D.C.

  • Minimum experience by education: 12 years with a bachelor's degree; 10 years with a master's degree; 7 years with a Ph.D.; 14 years with an associate degree; or 16 years in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex technical projects involving engineering, infrastructure modernization, telecommunications, aviation systems, or other mission-critical environments.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams across multiple organizations.
  • Experience managing technical schedules, risks, action items, deliverables, and customer communications.
  • Experience developing engineering documentation, technical reports, implementation plans, requirements packages, or acquisition documentation.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities in dynamic environments.
  • Experience working directly with Government customers and senior leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience supporting the FAA, Department of Transportation, or National Airspace System modernization programs.
  • Experience with aviation weather systems, including AWOS, ASOS, VWOS, WCAM, weather sensors, environmental monitoring systems, or related airport infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with FAA siting requirements, Airport Layout Plans (ALP), and NAS interface standards, including data-flow and systems-integration requirements.
  • Experience coordinating remote field site surveys, engineering assessments, or installation activities.
  • Knowledge of airport communications, networking, power infrastructure, environmental systems, and site readiness considerations.
  • Familiarity with FAA engineering, quality assurance, configuration management, safety, and acquisition processes.
  • Experience supporting system implementation, testing, integration, and operational transition.
  • Experience using Microsoft Project, Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar project management tools.
  • Agile experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-level systems engineering support for data flows and dependencies between weather observation systems and external NAS systems.
  • Manage interfaces between weather observation systems and interconnected NAS systems, maintaining data-flow integrity across system boundaries.
  • Develop and maintain integrated project schedules, action-item trackers, risk registers, and technical deliverable schedules.
  • Support project reviews, briefings, status reporting, and executive-level communications.
  • Lead engineering support for AWOS weather observation projects, including pre-site surveys, site investigations, engineering drawings, and transmittals.
  • Oversee complete AWOS engineering packages in accordance with FAA siting requirements, Airport Layout Plans (ALP), and modular scalability standards.
  • Direct systems-level engineering design deliverables, including vicinity maps, project location plans, site development drawings, grading and storm drainage plans, and equipment pad designs.
  • Ensure site plans accurately show existing and proposed conditions, electrical-service trenching, and coordination with concurrent projects where applicable.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to complete drawings, analysis reports, and implementation packages accurately and on schedule.
  • Support preparation, quality review, and delivery of technical reports, engineering recommendations, requirements documentation, and implementation packages.
  • Track technical issues, risks, assumptions, dependencies, and decisions through resolution.
  • Maintain traceability among requirements, engineering recommendations, site survey findings, project decisions, and final deliverables.
  • Coordinate technical discussions with FAA representatives, engineering organizations, subcontractors, and installation partners.
  • Support procurement planning by identifying long-lead materials, equipment dependencies, and implementation constraints.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Quality, Safety, Cybersecurity, Contracts, Logistics, Procurement, and Program Controls.
  • Assist in developing implementation strategies, migration planning, and technical transition activities.
  • Recommend process improvements to enhance project execution, documentation quality, and schedule performance.
