Perform work under the direct supervision of skilled and semi-skilled workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The Aviation Heavy Equipment Service Technician Apprentice shall be trained and perform skilled maintenance and repair work on tractors, fire apparatus, heavy construction equipment, generators, and Electric Vehicles including but not limited to Buses and light duty vehicles, and other standard/special automotive equipment operated by the Aviation Department. This position will perform work under the guidance and general direction of the apprenticeship mentor and supervisor. In addition, the Aviation Heavy Equipment Service Technician Apprentice will be required to attend Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and earn an Associate of Applied Science in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology. This is in addition to performing on-the-job semi-skilled tasks in mechanical maintenance.

Requirements

High School graduate/GED preferred.
Candidate must maintain successful enrollment per educational requirements at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC).
Read and write sufficiently to complete related paperwork.
Computer literacy required
Professionally represent the airport and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the traveling public, and tenants.
All other duties associated with achieving the requisite skills needed for a Fleet Maintenance Mechanic.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Valid driver’s license with no more than 6 points and ability to qualify for a City driving permit.
Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude them from employment.
Subject to 24-hour emergency call back to work.
Must be available for work for a rotating weekend and holiday duty schedule.
Shift subject to change.
Must be able to meet admission requirements associated with college-level related courses associated with apprenticeship programs.

Responsibilities

Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
Perform preventative maintenance on a variety of airport equipment: Automobiles, trucks, graders, mowers, tractors, buses, fire trucks, small-motorized equipment, in addition to other standard & special automotive equipment
Perform diagnosis and repair of maintenance-related issues.
Servicing and repairing electrical systems on Electric Vehicles within the Aviation Fleet.
Ability to prepare/maintain work records & routine reports.
Ability to follow oral & written instructions.
Care for tools/equipment/materials used in all types of automotive repair work.
Work in conjunction with daily workload & academic schedule to maintain forty hours per week.
Shift may vary depending on the academic schedule.
