About The Position

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Aviation Division Director in our Aviation Division in Chesterfield, Virginia. This position is responsible for the effective and efficient management of allocated resources and administers the Department’s Aviation and Med-Flight programs statewide. The Director will direct the activities of the Aviation Division to meet the Department’s goals and objectives, and manage the activities of the Division’s employees for the observance of orders, proper performance of duty, and the maintenance of discipline. This role also fosters a cooperative relationship among the Department and aviation community, the public, and related agencies and organizations. Additionally, the Director will oversee the development and administration of cross-training programs/or desk procedures for subordinate supervisory staff to ensure continuity of operation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), state, and federal regulations governing flight safety and operations.
  • Knowledge of supervisory policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of budget and procurement policies.
  • Knowledge of aviation maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Skill in aviation operations coordination.
  • Skill in budget administration.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Skill in aviation technology and software.
  • Ability to supervise and lead staff.
  • Ability to strategically plan, coordinate, and oversee complex flight operations.
  • Ability to interpret aviation data and safety metrics.
  • Ability to manage organizational change and support workforce continuity.
  • Ability to analyze operational needs and anticipate issues.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and update division policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain professional standards.
  • Ability to partner with FAA and industry stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate complex aviation issues clearly to executives.
  • Ability to develop and mentor staff.
  • Second class FAA medical certificate.
  • FAA commercial pilot certification with FAA instrument rating in both airplanes and helicopters.
  • FAA flight instructor and instrument flight instructor ratings in both airplanes and helicopters.
  • A valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Supervisory experience leading and managing aviation operations or directly assisting with such management is required.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • The Director shall reside within 90 minutes of the Aviation Division Headquarters, located at the Chesterfield County Airport.
