AVD DRE - Chassis Systems

General Motors•Warren, MI
•Hybrid

About The Position

The Advanced Vehicle Development (AVD) Chassis Design Release Engineer leads chassis subsystem development for passenger vehicles and light trucks during advanced development, from vehicle architecture and concept design through cost estimation, structural analysis, performance assessment, and delivery of a sourcing-ready design. Candidates with experience in Brakes, Tire/Wheel Systems (TWS), Fuel, Mounts, Induction, or Exhaust may be a strong fit. The role guides teams toward balanced subsystem solutions that optimize cost, mass, manufacturability, assembly, durability, and vehicle performance. It involves reviewing and evaluating designs and packaging in Teamcenter, collaborating with designers and cross-functional partners, and developing manufacturing-feasible solutions in a fast-paced environment with ambiguity and frequent change. The role is categorized as hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times a week or at another frequency set by their manager. Travel is less than 25%. Relocation benefits are not provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or extensive equivalent experience.
  • Experience in chassis subsystem product engineering and/or analysis; experience in Brakes, Tire/Wheel Systems (TWS), Fuel, Mounts, Induction, or Exhaust is preferred.
  • Ability to interrogate Unigraphics CAD data to review designs.
  • Ability to work in Teamcenter.
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively in an early, rapidly evolving design environment with significant ambiguity and frequent change.
  • Ability to collaborate with others to resolve issues and escalate concerns when appropriate.
  • Ability to work proactively and manage projects toward long-term deliverables without daily guidance.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of experience in a chassis subsystem-related role.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and emerging technologies related to chassis systems.
  • Experience in very early vehicle design and development phases.
  • Ability to create Unigraphics CAD sketches to develop ideas for a designer when necessary.
  • DFSS Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop engineering subsystem solutions for new vehicle programs, using a clean-sheet approach to create detailed, balanced system solutions.
  • Lead physical integration, packaging, and functional integration, including performance assessments and trade-off negotiations across components and requirements.
  • Benchmark competing solutions for performance, cost, mass, and related attributes.
  • Conduct Health of the Parent reviews to address lessons learned and prior program issues in new designs.
  • Collaborate with Chassis Engineers and cross-functional partners—including Design, CAE, Design Studio, Vehicle Architecture, Purchasing, Cost Estimating, Performance Integration, Manufacturing, Service Engineering, Body, Powertrain, Electrical, and other commodity teams—to develop vehicle solutions.
  • Work with designers to keep CAD data in Unigraphics and Teamcenter current; make direct CAD updates when appropriate and within the candidate’s capabilities.
  • Develop and refine solution objectives, including piece cost, tooling, mass, quality, and performance, and report status to leadership as required.
  • Support early physical mock-ups or hardware testing using 3D-printed parts or simulated hardware as needed.
  • Lead DFSS or other projects to refine customer requirements and improve design robustness.
  • Lead subsystem DFMEA activities.
  • Work with downstream Design Release Engineers to support sourcing and validation of production components and systems.
  • Collaborate with component technical specialists to implement GM component and system strategies on new programs.
  • Partner with CAE engineers to assess system performance against requirements and iterate toward an optimized design.
  • Create and lead technical peer reviews to ensure best practices and lessons learned are implemented.
  • Create readiness assessments ahead of significant program gates, summarizing status, risks, and key issues.

Benefits

  • Well-being support at work and at home, described in GM’s Benefits Overview and Total Rewards resources.
