AV Service Engineer — Control Systems & Device Integration

Evertz Microsystems LimitedBurlington, ON
CA$50,000 - CA$70,000Onsite

About The Position

Evertz AV is seeking a Service Engineer with a focus on Control System customization and deployment, specifically using VUE, their software-defined control and monitoring platform. VUE integrates control of broadcast/AV infrastructure (routing, multiviewers, master control, audio processing) into a customizable interface and can be extended to third-party equipment. The role involves understanding customer workflows, creating control surfaces, testing, and deploying solutions. This requires expertise in VUE configuration, device driver development, scripting, and implementing direct API control (REST, SOAP, SNMP, WebSocket, serial protocols, and proprietary vendor SDKs). The Service Engineer acts as a technical liaison between customer needs, third-party documentation, and Evertz's control ecosystem, playing a key role in system deployment and functionality.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline — or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Hands-on programming/scripting ability (e.g., C#, C++, Python, JavaScript, or similar) sufficient to build or modify device drivers from a protocol spec.
  • Working knowledge of common device communication protocols: TCP/IP, UDP, serial (RS-232/RS-422/RS-485), SNMP, and RESTful/SOAP web APIs.
  • Comfort reading third-party equipment documentation (protocol manuals, SDKs, MIBs, APIs and other standards specifications) and translating it into working control logic.
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts — comfortable diagnosing whether an issue lives in the device, the network, the driver, or the VUE configuration.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites for commissioning, training, and escalated support.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to document technical work clearly for both internal teams and customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience programming AV control systems (Crestron SIMPL/SIMPL#, AMX NetLinx, Extron Global Scripter/GUI Designer, Q-SYS).
  • Exposure to Evertz MAGNUM-OS, VistaLINK PRO, or broadcast router control concepts (sources/destinations, salvos, tally/UMD).
  • Experience integrating disparate systems via API (building or consuming REST/SOAP endpoints, handling auth tokens, parsing JSON/XML).
  • Familiarity with SDVN/SMPTE ST 2110, IP-based broadcast infrastructure, or Pro AV over IP environments.
  • Working knowledge of Linux.
  • AVIXA CTS / CTS-D / CTS-I certification.
  • Experience with Evertz MAGNUM School, MAGNUM-OS Academy, or VistaLINK School training.
  • Background supporting government, defense, or other secure/mission-critical AV environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy custom VUE widget layouts and workspaces tailored to customer operational workflows.
  • Integrate VUE with MAGNUM-OS for router control, multiviewer management, master control/branding, and playout systems.
  • Configure alarms, salvos, UMDs, and automation/override widgets to match site-specific operational requirements.
  • Create new device drivers for third-party equipment not natively supported by VUE, based on vendor protocol documentation.
  • Modify and extend existing Evertz device drivers to support additional functionality, firmware revisions, or non-standard implementations.
  • Test, validate, and document driver behavior against real hardware in lab and field environments.
  • Work with Evertz product/R&D teams to escalate driver issues, contribute improvements, and stay current on VUE's driver framework.
  • Evaluate third-party device APIs (REST, SOAP, WebSocket, proprietary SDKs) and determine the best integration path.
  • Configure VUE to communicate directly with device-native APIs where full driver development isn't required or practical.
  • Troubleshoot authentication, polling/subscription behavior, and latency issues between VUE and third-party systems.
  • Document integration patterns for reuse across future projects and customers.
  • Commission VUE-based control systems on customer sites and deliver operational training.
  • Respond to customer issues involving control logic, driver behavior, or third-party integration failures; troubleshoot to root cause.
  • Partner with sales engineering and product management to scope control/integration requirements during the pre-sales and design phase.
  • Author internal documentation (driver specs, integration notes, best practices) for the technical support and engineering teams.
