Autonomy Engineer (Mid Career) - Millennium Space Systems

Boeing•El Segundo, CA
•$104,550 - $172,000•Onsite

About The Position

Millennium Space Systems, part of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, is a small satellite company focused on national security missions, including missile warning and Earth observation. Autonomy Engineering supports mission success through onboard fault management and autonomy across the program lifecycle. The team defines fault detection, isolation, and response (FDIR) architectures and develops and validates satellite- and constellation-specific fault configurations to maintain spacecraft health and safety and meet mission objectives. The engineer serves as the autonomy responsible engineering authority for a program, study, or proposal. The role develops and decomposes fault and autonomy requirements; defines spacecraft states, modes, and transitions; leads autonomy architecture development, including fault tolerance and redundancy; analyzes onboard fault-test thresholds and persistence; and designs and tests responses that contain hardware failures. The engineer also develops tools and procedures for on-orbit operations, supports mission operations on console, and may lead multidisciplinary engineering work. The role contributes to mission CONOPS and Design Reference Missions and supports end-to-end software integration, validation, and testing. This is a 100% onsite position, with first-shift hours. The internal job code is Systems Engineer, and the team is hiring at Levels 3–4. Applicants must meet U.S. export-control requirements and be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance. The posting also states that the position does not require a security clearance. Applicants must satisfy the company’s conflict-of-interest assessment process. The position is not contingent upon a program award, and the employer will not sponsor employment visas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent; advanced degrees may augment years of industry experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in satellite design and/or operation.
  • Familiarity with one or more satellite subsystems and/or system-level analysis.
  • Experience designing, developing, and verifying spacecraft fault detection, isolation, and response (FDIR).
  • Experience designing, developing, and verifying spacecraft autonomy software/configuration.
  • Familiarity with satellite testing and/or on-orbit mission operations.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance; the U.S. Government requires U.S. citizenship for this clearance.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
  • Must be willing to apply for and maintain a security clearance.
  • Must satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 9 years of experience in satellite design and/or operation.
  • Expertise with one or more satellite subsystems and/or system-level analysis.
  • Experience designing satellite mission CONOPS and deriving fault/autonomy requirements from those CONOPS.
  • Technical leadership experience, including setting program-work direction and creating processes and standards.
  • Experience with satellite testing and/or on-orbit mission operations.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead fault and autonomy requirements definition, verification, and validation.
  • Define satellite and constellation states, modes, transitions, and other autonomous spacecraft behaviors.
  • Contribute to, and in some cases own, architecture concepts, CONOPS, and technology trade-off analyses.
  • Design and validate onboard fault detection, isolation, and responses; perform end-to-end validation of autonomy products and behaviors.
  • Support on-console operations for on-orbit missions.
  • Develop and decompose fault and autonomy requirements and define fault and autonomy architecture, including fault tolerance and redundancy requirements.
  • Define and analyze thresholds and persistence for onboard fault tests.
  • Design and test fault responses to contain failed hardware and maintain spacecraft health and safety.
  • Provide tools and procedures for on-orbit mission operations and support on-console mission operations as a mission specialist.
  • May lead a multidisciplinary team, decompose and prioritize work, and verify results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
