About The Position

The General Services Agency (GSA) is responsible for a broad spectrum of services to all County departments and agencies, including Fleet Services, Facilities, Procurement, Special Services, Security Business Support, and the Parks Department. Fleet Operations of the GSA maintains and works on a variety of County Vehicles and Heavy Equipment. Under general supervision, the Automotive Systems Technician (II, III) installs, tests, repairs, maintains, and removes electronic and electrical mobile equipment from vehicles and related equipment. This role may also assist in new vehicle preparation, restoration, and/or modification of vehicles and equipment. The successful candidate will possess excellent customer service skills with 2 to 5 years of experience in troubleshooting, installation, testing, repair, maintenance, and removal of electronic and electrical automotive equipment. The ideal candidate will have some experience or the ability to work well with others and, at the III level, oversee and train less experienced employees.

Requirements

• Automotive Systems Technician II: Two (2) years of experience in performing mobile communications installation, testing, and repair OR one (1) year as an Automotive Systems Technician I.
• Automotive Systems Technician III: Five (5) years of experience in performing mobile communications installation, testing, and repair OR three (3) years as an Automotive Systems Technician II.
• Incumbents must be capable of lifting up to 40 pounds, unassisted.
• Possess and maintain a valid California driver license.
• Be able to recognize and identify colors.
• Be capable of a full range of body movements including, but not limited to, reaching, bending, standing, grasping, kneeling and twisting.
• Be capable of working in tight quarters and awkward positions.
• Be willing to undergo a background check by the Ventura County Sheriff Department.

Nice To Haves

• Automotive Systems Technician II: Possession of the Mobile Electronics Certified Professional (MECP), Certified Electronics Technician (CET) Associate level certifications, and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification.
• Experience in mobile radio programming.
• Motorola radio programming and antennae.
• Experience in performing electronic installations on law enforcement, emergency response and/or Public Works vehicles/heavy equipment.
• Automotive Systems Technician III: Possession of the Mobile Electronics Certified Professional (MECP), Certified Electronics Technician (CET) Associate level certifications, Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification and FCC license (elements 1 and 3).
• Motorola radio programming and antennae design.

Responsibilities

• Modifies, fabricates and alters original configurations on automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, specialized emergency and related equipment for the installation and repair of auxiliary components systems such as two-way radios, computers, video equipment, sirens, lights, mounts and brackets.
• Disassembles and assembles vehicles and equipment as needed to perform maintenance, repairs, diagnostics or installation of systems and other auxiliary equipment and components.
• Test after repairs to insure proper operation of vehicles and equipment.
• Inspects and tests electrical systems and equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions, using visual inspections, electronic test equipment and computer software.
• References schematics and manufacturers' specifications to understand electrical connections and locate problems.
• Operates vehicles as required to carry out maintenance.
• Maintains electronic records of work orders, repairs performed and time worked.
• Performs related work as assigned.
• Working on the more difficult assignments or projects (Automotive Systems Technician III).
• Lead functions including guiding, checking, correcting and reporting on the work of the team (Automotive Systems Technician III).
• Training lower level Automotive Systems Technicians (Automotive Systems Technician III).
