About The Position

Skilled work in the operation of heavy-duty street maintenance and construction equipment. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction equipment entailing considerable manipulative difficulty in operation. Work is distinguished from other related classes by the responsibility for operating such equipment as bulldozers, backhoes, pay loaders, water trucks, and related equipment. An employee in this class operates this type of equipment as a regular assignment and is responsible for operating such equipment properly so as not to damage it. Supervision is received from a superior who assigns and inspects work in progress. Supervision may be exercised over a small group of workers.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 60 college credits and two (2) years experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment or trucks requiring the possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (Class B or higher).
  • A valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License (Class B or higher) is required and must be maintained valid throughout employment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of the required experience.
  • Proof of education: Proof of education in the form of college diploma or transcripts indicating completion of at least 60 college credits from an US accredited institution must be submitted.
  • To qualify under the equivalency clause, applicant must provide proof of education in one or more of the following applicable forms: copy of high school diploma or equivalent, Associate's degree, or Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • A valid State of Florida Commercial Driver License (Class B or higher) must be uploaded and attached with the application.

  • Depending on the hiring department, a candidate may also be required to obtain a Liquid Bulk/Tank Cargo (N) endorsement within 6 (six) months of appointment which must be maintained valid throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates bulldozer or pay loader in connection with construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, a park system, and related activities.
  • Operates low bed semi-trailer truck hauling heavy equipment, materials, and supplies to construction and maintenance projects.
  • Operates concrete mixer for curbs, gutters, and sidewalks repairs or any related activities.
  • Operates dual-purpose sewer maintenance machinery such as a vactor.
  • Operates road grader in normal maintenance work not requiring close tolerances.
  • Operates tank vehicles designed to transport any liquid or gaseous material with designed capacity of 1,000 gallons or more.
  • Operates water truck for irrigation of landscaping and maintenance of city right-of-way, park facilities, or closely related areas.
  • Operates backhoe or a combination of equipment in connection with maintenance and repairs of streets and parks such as trenching, backfilling, or any related activity.
  • Services and performs minor maintenance and repair work on equipment.
  • Performs other related work as required.
